As a Applied Scientist, you will lead the end-to-end development of advanced machine learning solutions, guiding initiatives from ideation through production, and mentoring peers across the organization. Your deep expertise in NLP, large language models, and machine learning systems will accelerate innovation and shape the future of pharmacy operations.
Job Description

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design, development, deployment, and scaling of advanced ML models leveraging NLP, generative AI, and reinforcement learning to improve prescription and fulfillment workflows.

  • Identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities for ML and automation, collaborating with product, engineering, and operations leadership.

  • Drive innovation in operational efficiency through algorithmic optimization, experimentation, and applied research.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams-product managers, engineers, data scientists, and pharmacists-to translate business challenges into data-driven solutions.

  • Establish and advocate for best practices in experimentation, model evaluation, and responsible AI within the Data Science organization.

  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to Applied Scientists and Data Scientists across projects.

  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to executives and non-technical stakeholders to influence data-driven decision-making.

A Bit About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 6+ years of experience as an Applied Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, or Data Scientist, with a proven record of delivering ML/AI models to production.

  • Demonstrated experience applying machine learning and statistical modeling techniques to complex real-world problems with measurable business impact.

  • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience in ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face).

  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to break down ambiguous problems into actionable solutions.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to distill complex technical ideas into clear business insights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep experience in NLP, LLMs, Generative AI, and/or Reinforcement Learning.

  • Experience in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, supply chain, or logistics optimization.

  • Expertise in building and maintaining production-grade ML pipelines using cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure (e.g., Kubeflow, Vertex AI, SageMaker).

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, influence strategy, and mentor junior scientists.

Additional Physical Job Requirements

Physical requirements for this role include the ability to work at a computer terminal with monitor, keyboard and mouse for extended periods of time, stoop, bend, and reach for equipment and supplies, make frequent repetitive motions required to operate a computer that include the wrists, hands and fingers, and lift, carry, push, pull, and move light objects up to 20 pounds. The role also requires the ability to effectively communicate through verbal interactions, discern auditory information, and visually perceive details to perform essential job functions.

Base Range: $136,000 - $170,000

Location Requirement: Employment at Alto is limited to individuals residing in the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington (WA), and Wisconsin.

Employment Authorization Requirement: Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. At this time, Alto is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa.
