Job description

Cobble Hill Health Center is seeking an experienced and driven Controller to oversee and manage all financial operations across our skilled nursing facility (SNF) and certified home health agency (CHHA). This hands-on leadership role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of all accounting operations, maintaining strong financial controls, and supporting regulatory compliance in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

The ideal candidate will possess strong healthcare finance knowledge, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to thrive in a detail-oriented environment while ensuring financial integrity and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, cash management, and financial reporting across multiple healthcare entities
  • Own and manage the monthly close process, ensuring reconciled and accurate trial balances are completed on schedule
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation for all journal entries, reconciliations, and regulatory filings
  • Review and approve weekly check runs, wires, and cash disbursements while ensuring proper approvals and GL coding
  • Monitor cash flow, banking relationships, and financial controls
  • Review payroll, benefits, accruals, and employer contributions to ensure accuracy and proper accounting treatment
  • Prepare and submit quarterly payroll tax filings including Form 941 and NYS-45 reconciliations
  • Ensure accurate intercompany accounting, allocations, accruals, and eliminations between entities
  • Post monthly billing, cash receipts, bank activity, investment entries, and recurring journal entries to the general ledger
  • Review and approve reconciliations prepared by accounting staff including AP, payroll, bank, and intercompany accounts
  • Coordinate audits and work closely with external auditors, consultants, and regulatory agencies
  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for annual Medicare Cost Reports, financial statement audits, pension audits, and insurance reporting
  • Calculate and submit monthly New York State Cash Receipts Assessment reports
  • Analyze financial data and provide strategic recommendations to executive leadership
  • Maintain internal controls and implement process improvements where necessary
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting and finance staff
  • Collaborate with department leaders to support operational and financial goals

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience including leadership responsibilities
  • Minimum of 2 years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or comparable leadership role preferred
  • Healthcare experience required
  • Nursing home or long-term care experience preferred but not required
  • Experience working within skilled nursing facilities (SNF) and/or certified home health agencies (CHHA) strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare financial operations, budgeting, multi-entity accounting, and intercompany accounting
  • Experience with Medicare Cost Reports, NYS Cash Receipts Assessment, RHCF-4 reporting, and reimbursement processes preferred
  • Familiarity with union payroll, benefit remittances, and collective bargaining agreement calculations preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software required
  • Experience with Power BI, SQL, or finance reporting automation tools preferred
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive financial information with discretion
