Job description

Associated Grocers is seeking a talented Deli/Bakery Merchandiser to join our Retail Operations Team!

In this role, you will partner with our Member-Retailers to drive profitability and enhance in-store performance. Responsibilities include assisting with the planning and layout of equipment for new and remodeled stores, evaluating deli and bakery departments to provide strategic recommendations, and supporting the setup of shelving and product displays to optimize merchandising impact.

This position also serves as a key liaison between Member-Retailers and warehouse personnel, ensuring effective communication, seamless coordination, and improved overall operational efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Sell programs to Member- Retailers.
  2. Evaluate existing equipment and recommend improvements where required
  3. Study customer shopping patterns and make recommendations
  4. Ensure deli/bakery quality compares with expected standards
  5. Review product cost and suggested retail price in relation to competition
  6. Recommend competitive retail price consideration where appropriate
  7. Assist Member-Retailers in preparing a budget for their deli/bakery departments
  8. Explore reasonable promotional opportunities to build deli/bakery sales and increase profit
  9. Advise warehouse personnel on measures to increase efficiency while increasing distribution
  10. Compare Member-Retailer’s deli/bakery quality with competition
  11. Inform purchasing department on Member-Retailers’ requests
  12. Act as a liaison between warehouse and Member-Retailers
  13. Assist in food show and seminar preparation

Education and/or Experience                   

Fifth year college or university program certificate; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Computer Skills

Must have basic working knowledge of computers to include Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  1. The employee must maintain a current Personal Driver’s License issued by the state in which the employee resides. 
  2. The employee must maintain an appropriate motor vehicle record. 

Other Skills and Abilities                   

  1. Knowledge of grocery and bakery/deli products
  2. Ability to work with little supervision
  3. Good interpersonal and communication skills
  4. Ability to sell programs for increased sales
  5. Operate harmoniously and cooperatively with others within and outside of department. Must promote a positive work environment. 

Other Qualifications                   

Ability to travel 5-6 nights/month, up to 2 weeks at new store openings.
