What is an Excel Center?

An Excel Center is a tuition-free public adult high school designed to help individuals earn their high school diploma, often while gaining industry-recognized certifications and college credits. The Excel Center model focuses on flexible class schedules, life coaching, and support services like childcare to help adult students overcome barriers to education. The goal is to provide adults with the credentials and skills they need for better career opportunities and personal growth.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges of working as a teacher at an Excel Center adult high school?

Teachers at an Excel Center adult high school typically balance instructional duties with providing individualized support to adult learners pursuing their high school diplomas. You’ll create lesson plans, adapt materials for diverse learning needs, and collaborate closely with coaches and support staff to address barriers like work schedules or childcare. A common challenge is helping students overcome educational gaps and stay motivated, often requiring creative problem-solving and strong relationship-building skills. The environment is highly collaborative, with frequent team meetings and opportunities for professional development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Excel Center instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Excel Center Instructor, you need a background in education, strong instructional skills, and typically a bachelor’s degree, preferably with a teaching license. Familiarity with educational technology, learning management systems, and student data tracking tools is important for effective instruction and monitoring progress. Outstanding communication, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to motivate adult learners are essential soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for helping nontraditional students earn their high school diplomas and achieve long-term academic and career success.

Position Type: Salaried
Salary Range: $70,000.00 - 82,000.00

MERS/Missouri Goodwill Industries is looking for an energetic, self-motivated, and professional School Administrator (Cape Girardeau) to join our Cape Girardeau Excel Center team! The ideal candidate will support our mission, "Changing Lives Through the Power of Work!" and embody our core values of diversity, integrity, passion, professionalism, respect, and responsibility.

If you're seeking an opportunity that empowers you to achieve new goals while pursuing a mission-driven career, then this is the perfect fit for you.

About the Role

The Excel Center School Administrator role is not a traditional principal role. It’s a role where adult learners, who have chosen to invest in themselves, are the center of our daily work. Unlike traditional graduates, our graduates are parents, grandparents, caretakers, and family members who receive a credit-bearing diploma (not a GED) with generations of loved ones cheering in the seats. This role will challenge your mental models of what school can be and what it can do to change lives through the power of work. Your innovative leadership will rewrite the ending of our students’ educational past and start a new story of their families’ lives with rewarding careers and sustainable wages. Your school’s success isn’t about test scores, it’s your team’s ability to transition our students into the workforce and become economically self-sufficient.

If you’re ready for a bucket-filling leadership opportunity alongside passionate, mission-driven educators, this could be the next chapter in your professional journey.

  • Develop, implement, and utilize systems to track student progress, barrier removal, and staff performance.
  • Cultivate community relationships that raise the program’s profile and grow into pathways for students to pursue their desired career pathway.
  • Participate in agency-level and Goodwill Education Initiatives (GEI) network-level training programs and conferences.
  • Implement agency policies related to Facilities, IT, Human Resources, and Business/Finance.
  • Maintain organizational priorities while nimbly adapting to changing circumstances.
  • Balance autonomy and accountability as a leader within the program model.
