Job description

Pathologists' Assistant

Fairview is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Pathologists' Assistant to join the Pathology team at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital. This is a full-time, day-shift position, with hours generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. No weekends are required.

In this role, you will work collaboratively with pathologists, laboratory professionals, and healthcare teams to support high-quality patient care through the examination and processing of surgical specimens. The Pathologists' Assistant works under the supervision of a board-certified anatomic pathologist. Responsibilities include gross examination of surgical specimens as well as frozen sectioning, gross photography, and preparing tissue samples for ancillary studies and for various other laboratory evaluations. Hours will rotate on a weekly basis, and the position will be stationed primarily at one site, with rotation for coverage at another site.

  • Follows laboratory policies and procedures in the performance of technical duties in the laboratory.
  • Prepares, performs and reports anatomic gross analysis of surgical specimens, reviews dictations for accuracy.
  • Selects, dissects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination and/or ancillary testing (e.g. flow cytometry, cytogenetics, etc.).
  • Performs gross and microscopic photography as needed.
  • Ensures samples received are handled accordingly to policy and gross room manual and assists gross room staff with sample handling questions.
  • Ensures block labeling, block counts, and processing of grossed samples are exact, and any discrepancies are addressed and communicated promptly.

Required Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in Biochemical Sciences AND completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NACCLS) accredited Pathologist's Assistant Training Program • Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided or
  • Equivalent education and training • Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided
  • Baccalaureate or higher degree applicants should possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Health and Human Services (HHS) approved certification. • ASCP - Pathologists' Assistant (PA) within 1 Year or
  • Applicants qualifying by equivalent education and training must possess current Health and Human Services (HHS) approved certification. • ASCP - Pathologists' Assistant (PA) Upon Hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year surgical grossing experience.
