Department:  Multi-Department

Hourly Rate:  $18.00/hour

OVERVIEW OF THE UNIVERSITY

SUMMARY
Washington Adventist University is hiring student workers to support operations for the UNESCO Center for Peace Camp, hosted on campus from July 19 to August 1, 2026. This is a flexible, temporary position. Students hired into this role may be assigned to one or more functional areas across campus depending on the needs of the event, and may report to different supervisors based on their assignment. Assignments may include residence hall and front desk support, housekeeping and facilities support, campus safety and security support, and general event and hospitality support. Workers should expect that their specific duties, work location, and supervisor may vary from shift to shift.
 
ASSIGNMENT AND REPORTING STRUCTURE
  • This position does not have a single fixed work location or supervisor.
  • Students may be assigned to one or more of the functional areas listed below based on event needs, staffing levels, and student availability.
  • Each assignment area has its own supervisor. Students report to the supervisor of the area to which they are assigned for a given shift.
  • Assignments may change during the event period. Students are expected to follow the direction of the supervisor on duty for each assigned shift.
  • The Office of Human Resources coordinates overall scheduling and placement of student event staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General (all assignments):
  • Report on time for each scheduled shift, dressed appropriately for the assigned role and setting.
  • Follow the direction of the supervisor on duty and adhere to all University and departmental policies and safety procedures.
  • Provide friendly, professional, and courteous service to event guests, delegates, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and a professional presence at all times.
  • Keep an accurate time record and submit hours as directed.
  • Report safety hazards, incidents, or concerns to the supervisor on duty or Campus Security.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Residence Hall and Front Desk Support (if assigned):
  • Provide warm greetings and assist guests and delegates at residence hall and event front desks.
  • Answer and route incoming calls and make announcements as needed.
  • Ensure visitors sign in and follow building access procedures.
  • Monitor lobby and desk activity and notify the supervisor on duty or Security of any concerns.
  • Maintain front desk logs, forms, and supplies, and keep the desk and work area clean.
Housekeeping and Facilities Support (if assigned):
  • Maintain assigned residence hall, event, and public spaces in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Perform a variety of building services and setup and breakdown duties for event spaces.
  • Assist with room preparation, restocking, and general grounds upkeep as directed.
  • Operate cleaning equipment safely and report maintenance issues to the supervisor on duty.
Campus Safety and Security Support (if assigned):
  • Serve as a visible, approachable presence and provide a warm, professional welcome to guests, delegates, staff, and students.
  • Monitor access points and support event and campus access and safety protocols, reminding individuals to display identification as required.
  • Maintain an approachable presence to discourage suspicious or unauthorized activity.
  • Report suspicious activity, safety hazards, or maintenance issues to Campus Security or the supervisor on duty.
  • Assist the campus security team with general safety-related support as needed.
General Event and Hospitality Support (if assigned):
  • Assist with event setup, registration, wayfinding, and breakdown.
  • Direct guests and delegates and answer general questions about campus.
  • Support event staff with administrative and logistical tasks as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Must be a Washington Adventist University student registered for either the Summer 2026 or Fall 2026 semester.
  • Good oral communication and customer service skills.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to follow instructions and adhere to policies and procedures.
  • Flexibility to work varied assignments, locations, supervisors, and hours, including evenings and weekends, based on event needs.
  • Ability to maintain a calm, professional, and welcoming presence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Depending on assignment, the employee may be required to stand or walk for extended periods; bend, kneel, and climb stairs; and lift and carry medium to heavy materials, supplies, and equipment. Some assignments require work in indoor and outdoor settings and during long hours, including weekends and evenings.
WORK SCHEDULE
This is a temporary, seasonal position for the duration of the UNESCO Center for Peace Camp, July 19 to August 1, 2026. Hours will vary based on event needs and are not guaranteed. In accordance with University policy, student employees must work less than 38 hours per week during the summer break, counting all hours worked across every department in which the student is employed. This position is not eligible for University benefits. Employment is at-will and ends at the conclusion of the event period unless otherwise extended in writing.
