Job Purpose:
The Rochester Public Schools Interpretation Services department is seeking an Intern to provide direct engagement and operational support across our community initiatives. This role sits at the critical intersection of education, communication, and social service advocacy. You will gain firsthand exposure to the inner workings of a professional language access department while supporting our daily workflows. Beyond administration, you will serve as a vital link for our multilingual families, building trust-based relationships and connecting them with essential community resources to ensure equitable access to support both inside and outside the classroom.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administrative Support: Assist with general departmental tasks, including data entry, file organization, and digital record-keeping.
- Communication Coordination: Help monitor incoming inquiries and assist in the routing of service requests to the appropriate team members.
- Document Assistance: Provide support in the preparation and formatting of multilingual materials and resources.
- Resource Management: Assist in the organization of departmental drives, glossaries, and linguistic reference materials.
- Event & Project Logistics: Provide "as-needed" support for the planning and execution of district events, meetings, and conferences.
- Outreach Support: Assist with departmental projects aimed at community engagement and information sharing.
Community Resource Liaison & Family Advocate
- Relationship-Centered Outreach: Build authentic relationships with multilingual families to understand their unique goals and the systemic challenges they face.
- Navigational Advocacy: Assist families in identifying and accessing vital community resources, serving as a knowledgeable guide for local social services.
- Ongoing Connection: Serve as a consistent point of contact, providing "check-ins" to ensure families feel supported and empowered as they navigate new systems.
Qualifications:
- Language Skills: Proficiency in English and a secondary language is preferred.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to organize digital files and manage basic schedules.
- Communication: Ability to interact professionally with staff and community members.
- Adaptability: A "helper" mindset with the ability to pivot between different types of tasks as departmental needs change.
- Technical Basics: Familiarity with standard office software (Word, Excel, Google Workspace).
