What is an event server?

Event servers are hospitality professionals responsible for setting up, serving, and clearing food and beverages at events such as weddings, conferences, banquets, and parties. Their duties often include preparing tables, assisting guests, delivering meals and drinks, and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable guest experience. Event servers must work efficiently as part of a team, follow event plans, and provide excellent customer service throughout the event.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an event server, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Event Server, you need strong customer service abilities, attention to detail, and basic food safety knowledge, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, banquet serving protocols, and sometimes a food handler's certification is typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and multitasking skills help you adapt to dynamic event environments and deliver memorable experiences. These skills ensure efficient service, guest satisfaction, and smooth event operations.

What are the typical challenges faced by event servers during large-scale events, and how can they be managed effectively?

Event servers often encounter challenges like managing high guest volumes, adapting to changing event schedules, and maintaining excellent service under pressure. To handle these effectively, strong communication with team members and coordinators is essential, as is the ability to stay organized and multitask. Many venues provide pre-event briefings and assign specific zones or tasks to each server, which helps with clarity and teamwork. Staying proactive and supporting colleagues during busy periods also ensures a smooth guest experience and reduces stress.

Job description

EVENT SERVERBe Part of the Moment. Be Part of the Team.

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Company: 12th Street Catering
Position: Event Server
Starting Pay: $20/hour

At 12th Street Catering, we don't just serve food.

We create experiences.

We’re there for the wedding someone has dreamed about for years. The celebration of a major milestone. The gala supporting an important cause. The company gathering that brings hundreds of people together.

And behind every unforgettable event is a team of people who care about making it exceptional.

That’s where you come in.

We’re looking for Event Servers who want more than another catering gig. We're building a team of dependable, energetic, hospitality-driven people who take pride in their work, support one another, and understand that the smallest details can make the biggest impression.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PART OF 12TH STREET

Being an Event Server here isn't simply about carrying a tray, setting a table, or serving dinner.

It's about hospitality.

It’s noticing what a guest needs before they have to ask.

It’s jumping in to help a teammate because you see they need it.

It’s taking pride in a beautifully set room.

It’s staying calm when an event gets busy.

It’s understanding that while this may be another Saturday night for us, it could be one of the most important nights of someone's life.

We take that responsibility seriously.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

As an Event Server, you'll work alongside our Event Managers, chefs, bartenders, and fellow servers to bring events to life throughout the Philadelphia area.

You may:

  • Prepare and beautifully set event spaces
  • Welcome guests with warmth and professionalism
  • Provide attentive food and beverage service
  • Execute cocktail hours, plated dinners, buffets, stations, receptions, weddings, galas, and corporate events
  • Anticipate guest needs and create genuine moments of hospitality
  • Work closely with your Event Manager and teammates
  • Help maintain clean, organized, polished event spaces
  • Assist with breakdown and ensure we leave every venue with the same care we brought into it
  • Step outside your assigned task when the team needs you

Around here, "that's not my job" isn't really part of the vocabulary.

One Team. One Event. One Goal: Make It Exceptional.

WHO THRIVES HERE

You don't need to know everything about catering on Day One.

We can teach technique.

What we're looking for is harder to teach:

Attitude. Character. Dependability. Energy. And the desire to take care of people.

You'll probably love working here if you:

  • Genuinely enjoy helping people
  • Take pride in doing things the right way
  • Show up when you say you will
  • Notice details others might miss
  • Can take direction while also thinking for yourself
  • Stay positive when things get busy
  • Enjoy being part of a team
  • Want feedback and opportunities to improve
  • Aren't afraid of hard work
  • Believe great hospitality can turn an ordinary interaction into a memorable one
OUR CULTURE

Our culture isn't something written on a poster and forgotten.

It's something we expect to see in how we treat our guests and each other.

Our Core Values guide how we work:

PASSION & CREATIVITY
Bring energy, ideas, and pride to what you do.

RELATIONSHIPS & TEAMWORK
Great events aren't created by individuals. They're created by teams.

INTEGRITY
Do the right thing—even when nobody is watching.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
Different people, experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives make our team stronger.

UNFAILING DEPENDABILITY
When your team is counting on you, you show up.

SERVICE & EXCELLENCE
Good isn't the goal. We continually look for ways to make the experience better.

Together, these values make up PRIDUS—and they're at the heart of what it means to represent 12th Street Catering.

THIS CAN BE MORE THAN A SERVER JOB

Some people join us because they're looking for flexible event work.

Others discover an industry they love.

We believe in recognizing people who step up.

Team members who demonstrate leadership, professionalism, dependability, and exceptional hospitality can have opportunities to grow into roles such as:

Key Server • Bartender • Wedding Party Service Lead • Event Manager • Training & Leadership Opportunities

Your growth starts with how you show up.

THE DETAILS

Starting Rate: $20/hour

Schedule: Event-based and flexible, including evenings and weekends.

Uniform: Professional all-black event attire, including black button-down shirt, black pants, black shoes, 12th Street Catering badge, and required apron.

Because events are physical, team members must be comfortable standing for extended periods, moving throughout event spaces, carrying service items, and assisting with event setup and breakdown.

Previous restaurant, catering, banquet, or hospitality experience is helpful—but character, reliability, and hospitality matter just as much to us.

WHY 12TH STREET?

Because we believe catering can be more than food.

It can create connection.

It can create celebration.

It can strengthen communities.

And it can create a workplace where people are proud of the team they belong to.

Our purpose is simple:

Crafting unforgettable events through exceptional hospitality, elevated cuisine, and thoughtful, detail-driven experiences.

If you want to clock in, do the minimum, and go home, this probably isn't the right team for you.

But if you want to work alongside people who care, challenge yourself, learn, grow, have some fun, and experience the feeling of looking around at the end of an incredible event and thinking—

"We did that."

—we'd love to meet you.

COME CREATE SOMETHING UNFORGETTABLE.

Join the 12th Street Catering Event Team.
