Job description

The Student Success Coach is responsible for providing a linkage between students and the College's support services through academic advising. The Student Success Coach works proactively to help the College meet its Student Success goals by fostering the academic advising and developmental needs of students.  This is achieved by providing coordination of academic advising, New Student Orientation, and other student success initiatives aimed at increasing retention and persistence. The Student Success Coach position has a main focus on academic advising and providing direct support to assigned advisees.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in related field.                 

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 

  • 1-3 years of progressive experience creating and delivering student educational activities, preferably in academic advising, coaching, and/or career development preferred. 
  • Demonstrated record of successful collaboration among academic and non-academic partners desirable.
  • Community engagement and service activities, a plus.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:     

  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders  (students, staff, alumni, faculty, and employers) to drive innovation and achieve departmental goals.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in student success, advising/coaching, student retention initiatives.
  • Ability to support strategic initiatives related to the College's retention activities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening, social awareness, and clear information sharing.

Help students navigate their academic program with success:

  • Coach students to support their success by asking intentional and strategic questions that empower the student to build on his/her strengths, establish goals, explore, and identify the most impactful and relevant solutions, and pave a clear path to success.
  • Guides matriculated students in multiple areas, as needed, including utilizing resources to navigate academic plans, course options and schedules, and use of electronic and other resources pertaining to registration and college success.
  • Build and sustain meaningful coaching relationships across the student lifecycle, with a focused commitment to supporting at-risk populations and advancing student retention and success outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Program Chairs through the Early Alert system by meeting regularly to review student progress, discuss at-risk students, and align on program logistics and targeted interventions to support student success.
  • Collaborate across various departments to design, enhance, and deliver resources, programs, and services that promote student achievement and engagement.
  • Implement and support strategic at-risk advising initiatives aligned with institutional priorities and the College's strategic plan, contributing directly to improved student persistence and retention.
  • Communicates effectively with students across multiple platform (in-person, Teams, phone, text, email), delivering accurate information and timely support. 

Coordinate support and retention efforts on behalf of the Department of Student Experience, including: 

  • Communicates with, provides interventions for, and monitors responses of students who have received course progress notifications, early alerts, and other early indicators of at-risk behavior that could threaten their ability to persist. 
  • Provides and supports student-centered activities/events that may include open houses, tours, orientation activities, graduation, and other celebration ceremonies.
  • Works variable schedule if needed, including occasional evenings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Coordinate student engagement activities, including New Student Orientation and other student experience events: 

  • Assist in the development, planning, and implementation of New Student Orientation, including managing relevant online content, preparing materials, and coordinating event-day logistics such as setup and execution.
  • Plan and coordinate student engagement experiences by contributing to the programming calendar and hosting at least one student engagement event each month during the academic year.
  • Collaborates with other student services staff to ensure students transition smoothly and remain engaged from deposit to enrollment.
