Job Description

DN Solutions is seeking a highly experienced Applications Engineer to serve as the Large Machine Tool Lead at our Chicago Tech Center. This role will lead technical activities related to large machine platforms, including double column machines, boring mills, and large vertical and horizontal machining centers.
This is a hands-on leadership role focused on heavy-duty machining, process execution, complex customer applications, and high-value project support. The position emphasizes machine setup, prove-outs, demonstrations, and real-world machining expertise.
The role also supports technical coordination with headquarters as needed to ensure alignment on machine configurations, special options, and project requirements.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as technical lead and subject matter expert for:
    • Double Column Machines (Bridge Mills)
    • Boring Mills
    • Large Vertical Machining Centers (VMCs)
    • Large Horizontal Machining Centers (HMCs)
    • Vertical Turning Centers and large platform systems
  • Lead machine setup, installations, prove-outs, and process execution for large and complex components
  • Develop and optimize machining processes for heavy cuts, large work envelopes, and challenging materials
  • Execute cutting demonstrations showcasing performance of large machine platforms
  • Support pre-sale engineering activities, including:
    • Machine selection
    • Application feasibility reviews
    • Customer process evaluations
    • Configuration recommendations
  • Provide hands-on technical support to key customers, distributors, and internal teams
  • Support project delivery, including coordination of special machine options and order requirements
  • Mentor Applications Engineers on large machine setup, workholding, tooling strategy, and troubleshooting
  • Collaborate closely with Sales and leadership on strategic large equipment opportunities
  • Support technical communication with headquarters to ensure alignment on specifications, processes, and project requirements
  • Train customers and internal teams on machine operation, controls, and best practices
  • Support open houses, trade shows, and customer events
  • Travel extensively for installations, demonstrations, and project support (up to 90%)

Job Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Machine Tool Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 10+ years of CNC machining experience, with strong focus on large machine tools
  • Proven experience with:
    • Double column machines
    • Boring mills
    • Large VMC/HMC platforms
  • Strong background in machine setup, rigging awareness, part alignment, and process validation
  • Experience with Fanuc and/or Siemens controls
  • Working knowledge of G-code programming
  • Demonstrated leadership or mentoring experience
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in heavy machining environments
  • Experience in Aerospace, Energy, Heavy Equipment, Government, or similar industries preferred
  • Ability to work across teams and collaborate in a global environment
