What are Event Operations Interns?

Event Operations Interns are entry-level professionals who assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of events. Their responsibilities often include helping set up venues, managing logistics, supporting event staff, communicating with vendors, and ensuring that events run smoothly. This internship provides hands-on experience in the events industry, helping interns develop organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. It's an ideal role for those looking to start a career in event management or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Event Operations Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Event Operations Intern, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a background in event management or hospitality, often supported by relevant coursework or internships. Familiarity with event management software, registration systems, and productivity tools like Microsoft Office is commonly required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help you adapt to changing circumstances and support event logistics effectively. These skills ensure smooth event execution, positive attendee experiences, and the ability to handle the fast-paced demands of live events.

What are some common challenges an Event Operations Intern might face, and how can they be addressed?

Event Operations Interns often encounter challenges such as managing tight timelines, coordinating with multiple vendors, and adapting to last-minute changes. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Proactively seeking clarification, maintaining clear checklists, and collaborating closely with team members can help interns navigate these challenges and contribute positively to event execution.

Job description

The Development department at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) is the organization’s fundraising apparatus, attracting and managing financial support for all AEI initiatives and operations. AEI is supported by individuals, foundations, and corporations that share AEI’s core values—free people, free markets, and American global leadership—and engage with the Institute through private and public events, publications, personal meetings, and more.

The Development intern will achieve a holistic understanding of the fundraising operations of a top-tier think tank and join a dynamic team with a unique and highly successful fundraising model. The intern will assist with researching prospective donors, executing donor outreach communications, and maintaining the capabilities of the team’s database. The intern will also gain experience in data analysis and reporting for key team objectives. The intern is encouraged to network with colleagues within and beyond the department and participate in scholarly events at the Institute, in addition to attending intern-specific programming. Candidates who are able to participate in the program in-person for close to 40 hours per week are encouraged to apply.

About AEI Internships

AEI internships offer a unique opportunity for undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience in research, writing, business, and communications at one of the nation’s leading think tanks.

The fall program dates are either Tuesday, September 8, to Friday, December 4, or Tuesday, September 15, to Friday, December 11.
