Evening Server information

What is an evening server?

Evening servers are hospitality professionals who work in restaurants, bars, or other dining establishments primarily during the evening hours. Their main responsibilities include taking orders, serving food and beverages, attending to guests' needs, and ensuring a pleasant dining experience. Evening servers often work during peak dining times, such as dinner service, and may also assist with setting up, cleaning, and closing the dining area. Excellent communication and customer service skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an evening server, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Evening Server, you need excellent customer service abilities, basic math skills for handling payments, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, menu knowledge, and local health and safety regulations is typically required. Strong communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills help you stand out when managing busy shifts and diverse customer needs. These competencies are vital for providing efficient, high-quality service and ensuring guest satisfaction in a fast-paced dining environment.

What are some common challenges evening servers face, and how can they be managed effectively?

Evening servers often experience high-pressure periods during dinner rushes, requiring strong multitasking and time management skills. Balancing multiple tables, handling special requests, and maintaining excellent customer service can be demanding, especially when working late hours. Building good communication with kitchen staff and teammates, staying organized, and remaining calm under pressure are key strategies for success. Most restaurants also provide support from experienced colleagues and managers to help new servers adapt smoothly.

Job description

The Velvet Note, Alpharetta’s internationally recognized intimate jazz club, is looking for an Experienced Lead Server to join our hospitality team immediately.

We are a small, elegant, 40-seat listening room where hospitality matters. Our guests come to us for exceptional live music, wonderful food and drinks, and personal service that makes an evening feel special.

Requirements & Ideal Candidate:

  • Solid upscale dining, fine-dining, or high-volume server experience.
  • Confident handling a room without sacrificing warmth, speed, or accuracy.
  • Ability to work quickly and quietly during live performances.
  • Strong suggestive selling skills and a polished, professional presence.
  • Cross-Training Mindset: While your primary focus is the floor, you must be open to learning behind the bar to support drink service when needed.

Why Join Us? With only 40 seats per show, you can provide genuinely personal service rather than racing around a huge floor. This is an ideal role for a seasoned professional looking for select evening/weekend shifts in a beautiful, adult environment.
