Evening Position information

What is an evening position?

Evening positions are jobs that require employees to work during the evening hours, typically starting in the late afternoon and ending at night. These roles are common in industries that operate beyond traditional business hours, such as hospitality, retail, healthcare, customer service, and security. Evening positions may offer flexible schedules and can be ideal for people seeking part-time work or those balancing other daytime commitments. Examples include evening shifts for cashiers, nurses, restaurant staff, and call center agents. Compensation and shift differentials may vary depending on the employer and industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an evening position?

To excel in an evening shift position, you generally need reliability, time management skills, and any job-specific qualifications such as a high school diploma or relevant certifications. Familiarity with time-tracking systems, workplace safety protocols, and any industry-specific tools (such as POS systems or inventory software) is often required. Strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to work independently are valuable soft skills for these roles. These skills ensure productivity, safety, and smooth operations during less supervised or lower-staffed hours.

What are some common challenges faced in an evening position and how can I prepare for them?

Evening positions often require adapting to non-traditional work hours, which can impact work-life balance and social activities. You may encounter fewer on-site colleagues or support staff, so strong self-management and problem-solving skills are important. Additionally, communication with daytime teams is key to ensure smooth handovers and continuity of work. Preparing by establishing a consistent routine, setting clear boundaries for personal time, and leveraging digital communication tools can help you succeed in this role.

What You'll Do

  • Create a warm welcome. Greet residents, guests, vendors, and their pets during a high-traffic arrival period; determine how you can help; provide directions or information; and connect visitors with the appropriate team member.ย
  • Manage calls and front desk communication. Answer incoming calls professionally, respond to routine questions, take accurate messages, and route calls when the appropriate team member is available. After business hours, document information clearly for follow-up by the property team.ย
  • Coordinate mail and packages. Receive, sort, log, secure, and distribute incoming mail and packages in accordance with community procedures. Deliver packages to residents' doors when requested and permitted by community practice, and conduct package audits to help maintain accurate records.ย
  • Support resident needs. Assist with amenity reservations, guest parking passes, local recommendations, lockouts, and other resident requests in accordance with community procedures. Listen carefully to concerns, including noise or neighbor-related concerns, and communicate them to the appropriate team member for follow-up.ย
  • Coordinate service requests. Document resident service requests accurately and communicate them to the maintenance team. Follow established emergency and after-hours procedures when immediate attention is required and provide clear information for follow-up.ย
  • Help build community. Support resident events and activities, including evening events, that encourage connection and create an engaging living experience.ย
  • Partner with the property team. Complete pending tasks from the day shift, assist with administrative work, maintain organized front desk records, and prepare clear notes or handoff information for the overnight or next-day team.ย
  • Maintain a polished environment. Keep the concierge desk, lobby, and nearby common areas organized and welcoming throughout the shift. Restock designated supplies, including Sparkle Kit and personal protective equipment items, as needed.ย
  • Follow community standards. Protect resident privacy, follow building access and safety procedures, remain attentive to activity in and around the lobby, and promptly report concerns, incidents, or unusual activity to the appropriate team member.ย

What We're Looking For

  • A genuine interest in helping people and creating a welcoming resident experience.ย
  • Strong communication, organization, judgment, and follow-through.ย
  • The ability to remain composed, professional, and solution-oriented while managing a fast-paced front desk and competing priorities.ย
  • Comfort using phones, computers, email, and property or package-management systems.ย
  • Customer service experience in hospitality, retail, multifamily property management, or another fast-paced, customer-facing environment is preferred. We are also open to training someone with the right service mindset.ย
  • The ability to work the established part-time schedule during the 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. evening shift, including weekends and holidays when scheduled.ย
