Position Information
Requisition Number GA00969 Position Title Graduate Assistant - Office of Sustainability 26-27 Position Eclass GF - Graduate Flat Pay Position Summary
The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.
Additional Details
The mission of UNCG's Office of Sustainability is to encourage and support the development and implementation of sustainable practices in administrative units of the university and create a meaningful link between academics and operations that supports use of the campus as a teaching laboratory.
The Office of Sustainability Graduate Assistant (Masters or Doctoral) will recruit and coordinate volunteers to support campus clean-ups and our Adopt-A-Stream responsibilities and promote environmental stewardship concepts and campus sustainability programs to the student body, including encouraging student residents to participate in the Green Room certification program, which provides students with tips for living an eco-friendly lifestyle.
The GA will assist with digital communications (newsletter, social media, calendars, etc.) and coordinate with student environmental clubs to increase their membership and support their programs.

The GA will attend UNCG Sustainability Council meetings and serve as the co-chair for the UNCG Green Fund Committee, a campus-based grant program that offers education, research, and professional development opportunities for students and employees by investing in campus infrastructure and programming to help meet the goals of the UNCG Climate Action Plan.

Applicants should be comfortable speaking in public and have a passion for protecting the environment and for community building. You'll need an attention for detail when managing the calendar of events and tracking data in Excel spreadsheets and some basic knowledge of social media (Facebook, Instagram, & LinkedIn) best practices. Some experience with graphic design (Adobe, Canva, etc.) would be helpful, but is not required.

Compensation is $7,000 per academic year ($3,500) a semester for 10-12 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters (no winter or summer work). The Office is open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., plus additional evening and weekend hours depending on events. A majority of the work will be conducted in the Office of Sustainability and on campus, but arrangements can be made for some to be conducted remotely. Flexible work schedule, but the expectation is availability of at least 3 days a week. This is a grant funded position for the 26-27 academic year only.

Please be sure your cover letter addresses your passion for environmental stewardship: recycling, climate change, gardening, environmental justice, etc. and provide examples of any work, volunteer, research, entrepreneurial, or club experience related to the responsibilities of this position. This position is open to all majors as long as you meet the required experience and can demonstrate an understanding of and passion for sustainability issues and a desire to contribute to campus life at UNCG.
