Job description

Executive Director of Outpatient Surgery

Position Summary

This role provides operational and strategic leadership for outpatient surgical services. It oversees all aspects of ambulatory surgical care including pre‑operative, intra‑operative, post‑anesthesia care, and related procedural areas. The Director will report to the Chief Nursing Executive and work closely with the Outpatient Surgery Medical Director and clinical staff to maintain safe, efficient, high‑quality operations and program sustainability.

Essential Functions
  • Clinical & Operational Leadership – Lead day‑to‑day operations, staffing, scheduling, patient flow, and case coordination. Maintain clinical presence and optimize resource use.
  • Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance – Ensure compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation, CAH regulations, state licensing, and accreditation. Lead quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, and incident investigation.
  • Staffing & Workforce Management – Recruit, train, schedule, supervise staff; promote cross‑training; conduct performance evaluations; foster teamwork and accountability.
  • Program Sustainability & Growth – Evaluate service mix and case volume, identify opportunities to expand or retain services, support recruitment of surgeons and anesthesia providers, and participate in capital planning.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration – Collaborate with Nursing, Sterile Processing, Materials Management, Quality, Infection Prevention, Clinics, and Facilities; serve on committees and leadership meetings.
Education

– Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related healthcare field (required).
– Master’s degree in nursing, healthcare administration, or related field (preferred).

Licensure & Certification

– Current RN license in Washington (required).
– CNOR or other perioperative certification (preferred).

Experience

– Minimum of 3–5 years of leadership experience in perioperative or surgical services.
– Experience running multi‑specialty 3‑4 room ambulatory surgery center.
– Experience in Critical Access Hospital or rural healthcare setting preferred.
– Demonstrated CMS compliance, staffing flexibility, and resource‑limited operations.

  • Hands‑on, adaptable leadership style suitable for small hospital environment.
  • Strong clinical judgment and operational problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to balance regulatory requirements with practical operations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
Physical Demands

– Ability to move throughout surgical and clinical areas, assist with patient care or equipment positioning, and respond quickly to emergencies.
– Variable schedule based on surgical volume and staffing needs.
