Job description

Position Summary: The Volunteer Recruitment Service Member plays a pivotal role in bridging the community with our mentoring and enrichment programs serving middle and high school youth. The Volunteer Recruitment Service Member supports the recruitment, onboarding, and engagement of adult volunteers who serve in Kid Power's mentoring and enrichment programs. Key responsibilities include representing Kid Power at community events and fostering strong connections and partnerships.
Who is the ideal candidate?
Our ideal candidate is someone who loves meeting new people, recruiting volunteers, and has a genuine passion for mentoring/education. This is a 20 hour/week in-person position. Members must be available for service Tuesdays and Wednesdays between the hours of 11am and 4pm. Remaining hours are flexible to accommodate your schedule and allow for a variety of community-based recruitment activities.
About Kid Power: At Kid Power, youth ignite their confidence and build the skills to thrive academically, strengthen their social-emotional wellness, and advocate for themselves and their communities.
Founded in 2002, Kid Power is a community-rooted nonprofit that empowers over 1,000 youth annually across Washington, DC and Montgomery County. With an annual budget of $2.2 million, our evidence-based programs focus on academic confidence, social-emotional wellness, and civic leadership. We value collaboration, community-building, and youth voice in everything we do.
All service hours, including phone outreach, email communication, planning, and service documentation, must be completed in person at Kid Power's office or in the community where service occurs.
This AmeriCorps service term runs from September 8, 2026 through August 31, 2027. Position availability and start date are contingent upon funding.
Key Responsibilities
Recruitment:
  • Carry out Kid Power's approved mentor recruitment plan through in-person presentations, tabling, community events, referral outreach, and follow-up with prospective mentors.
  • Conduct in-person outreach to community members, employers, universities, civic groups, and other prospective referral partners to increase awareness of Kid Power and generate mentor referrals.
  • Help ensure recruitment reaches prospective mentors from varied backgrounds and communities who can contribute a breadth of experiences and expertise to youth mentoring.

Intake:
  • Respond to routine inquiries from prospective mentors and explain service expectations, eligibility requirements, the intake process, and training requirements.
  • Guide prospective mentors through approved intake and orientation steps, including scheduling activities, sharing approved materials, providing reminders, and referring questions requiring staff decisions to the appropriate Kid Power employee.

Program Implementation:
  • Plan, prepare for, co-facilitate, and provide follow-up mentor orientations and trainings using staff-approved curricula and materials.
  • Help plan and facilitate in-person mentor engagement activities, including match socials, PowerUp! workshops, mentor recognition activities, recruitment events, and service projects.

Organizational Duties:
  • Document recruitment contacts, outreach activities, prospective mentor follow-up, orientation and training participation, and member-led engagement activities using established Kid Power tools and protocols.
  • Attend special events (family engagement events, etc.) to support Kid Power's initiatives.
  • Participate in AmeriCorps Days of Service
  • Participate in required supervision, BEAM planning meetings, AmeriCorps training, and meetings directly related to the member's approved service activities.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Passionate about Youth Development
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours (evening and occasional weekends)
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Organized, self-motivated, and solution-oriented
  • Willingness to undergo required background clearances for working with youth
  • Access to reliable transportation to attend regular community events

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Spanish
  • Experience recruiting or coordinating volunteers
  • Experience in community outreach or relationship-building
  • Experience with case management software tools
  • Familiarity with the DC community
