Help Shape One of the Most Creative Spaces at The Big E

Each September, thousands of exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of visitors experience the creativity of New England during The Big E, the fourth largest public event in North America.

Eastern States Exposition is seeking a Creative Arts & New England Center Program Manager (seasonal, April 1 - October 9) to organize and lead the competitions, exhibits, and programming that bring the New England Center to life. This role combines event coordination, volunteer leadership, and exhibitor engagement to ensure a smooth, welcoming, and vibrant Creative Arts experience.

This position focuses on the most operationally intensive months leading up to and during the fair and offers an opportunity to help shape one of the most dynamic spaces on the fairgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

Creative Arts Program Management

  • Coordinate Creative Arts competitions, including development of timelines, entry management, and exhibitor communications.
  • Produce and maintain accurate premium books and entry materials.
  • Assist exhibitors with online registration systems and entry processes.
  • Build strong relationships with superintendents, volunteers, and exhibitors.

New England Center Operations

  • Support daily operations of the New England Center building during the planning season and The Big E.
  • Coordinate stage programming and performance schedules.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth event operations.

Team Leadership

  • Recruit, train, and support seasonal staff and volunteers.
  • Delegate responsibilities and maintain clear communication across teams.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that values the experience of long-time volunteers and staff.

Visitor & Exhibitor Experience

  • Help create an engaging and welcoming Creative Arts environment.
  • Develop creative displays, themed exhibits, or interactive elements that enhance the visitor experience.
  • Encourage exhibitor participation and strengthen community engagement.
  • This role requires evening and weekend availability and full availability during the 17 days of The Big E.

What Success Looks Like

Keeping the Creative Arts program organized, collaborative, and engaging by:

  • Maintaining clear timelines and proactive planning
  • Communicating effectively with exhibitors, staff, and volunteers
  • Guiding teams through a smooth and successful fair
  • Introducing thoughtful improvements that enhance exhibitor and visitor experience

Over time, success is reflected in strong exhibitor relationships, increased participation, and a Creative Arts building that feels vibrant and welcoming.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience coordinating teams, volunteers, or event staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Patience assisting exhibitors with online systems and technology.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • A proactive mindset focused on planning, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong familiarity with technology (Windows OS, iPad, Microsoft Office, social media platforms, entry software and design/scheduling software).
  • Reliable transportation for regional outreach and on-site responsibilities.
  • The ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs and comfortably walk, sit, or stand for extended periods.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Outside of the box thinking, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor a must.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest or background in crafting, Creative Arts, or competitions.
  • Experience with fairs, festivals, or large public events.
  • An eye for exhibit presentation or display design.
  • Familiarity with The Big E and its traditions.

Hours & Compensation

  • This is a seasonal, FLSA non-exempt position from April 1 - October 9.
  • 30 hours/week regular schedule (40+ hours in August & September).
  • Pay Range $26–$28/hour
