Industry UsageUsed to define and implement smart contracts on EthereumCreates, tests, and maintains Ethereum smart contracts using Solidity
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding smart contract structure and deploymentLearning Solidity coding and development practices

Ethereum Contracts are the actual smart contracts deployed on the blockchain, defining rules and logic. Solidity Developers are the professionals who write, test, and maintain these contracts using the Solidity programming language. While Ethereum Contracts are the end product, Solidity Developers are the creators behind them, working within blockchain environments to bring smart contracts to life.

What are Ethereum contracts?

Ethereum contracts, also known as smart contracts, are self-executing programs that run on the Ethereum blockchain. They automatically enforce rules and execute actions as specified in their code when certain conditions are met, without the need for intermediaries. These contracts are commonly written in the Solidity programming language and are used for various applications, such as decentralized finance (DeFi), token creation, and automated transactions. Smart contracts are immutable once deployed, ensuring trust and transparency in their operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ethereum Smart Contract Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ethereum Smart Contract Developer, you need strong skills in blockchain fundamentals, proficiency in Solidity programming, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with development tools like Truffle, Hardhat, and blockchain testing frameworks, as well as experience with version control systems like Git, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on secure and efficient contracts. These skills ensure the delivery of robust, secure, and reliable decentralized applications in a rapidly evolving ecosystem.

What are some common challenges developers face when working on Ethereum smart contracts, and how can they be addressed?

Developers working on Ethereum smart contracts often encounter challenges such as ensuring contract security, optimizing for gas efficiency, and staying updated with evolving best practices. Security is especially critical, as vulnerabilities can lead to significant financial losses; thorough testing, code audits, and the use of established libraries like OpenZeppelin can help mitigate risks. Additionally, developers must carefully design functions to minimize gas costs and understand the constraints of blockchain immutability. Collaboration with other team members, including auditors and frontend developers, is essential to deliver robust, user-friendly decentralized applications.

Job description

Polymarket is the world's largest prediction market platform. We enable individuals to express views on real-world events by trading on outcomes across politics, economics, sports, culture, and current affairs. Built as a peer-to-peer marketplace with no centralized "house," Polymarket aggregates diverse opinions into transparent, market-based probabilities that reflect collective expectations about the future.
We're growing fast - both in terms of volume ($21B traded in 2025) and adoption as an alternative news source. Our ambition is to become a ubiquitous beacon of truth in global media and we need your help adding fuel to the fire.
About the role
Polymarket is looking for an experienced smart contract engineer to join our core protocol team. You'll design, build, and ship secure, high-performance smart contracts that handle millions in daily volume and keep our peer-to-peer markets running flawlessly.
You'll have end-to-end ownership-from ideation and architecture to implementation and deployment-while collaborating closely with a world-class engineering team. Expect a mix of building new protocol functionality, improving developer tooling, and responding quickly to the evolving security landscape in DeFi.
What you'll do
We're looking for an experienced individual contributor who loves turning tricky protocol problems into clean, secure smart contracts that power billions in on-chain activity.
  • Build secure, battle-tested smart contracts. You'll design, implement, and deploy Solidity-based contracts that are both elegant and hardened against exploits.
  • Level up the protocol. Contribute to protocol-level infrastructure, tooling, and new features that directly impact millions of users.
  • Respond to real-world challenges. Investigate vulnerabilities, simulate attack scenarios, and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Review and refine. Participate in rigorous code reviews to ensure quality, security, and maintainability.
  • Stay ahead of the curve. Keep up with the latest EVM developments, tooling, and best practices-and bring that knowledge back to the team.
  • Mentor and collaborate. Share your expertise with other engineers and work closely across product, design, and operations to bring ideas to life.

  • 4+ years of experience writing and deploying Solidity smart contracts in production.
  • Strong understanding of the EVM, DeFi protocols, and decentralized application architecture (including decentralized exchanges - Uniswap V2 + V3, Uniswap X, dYdX v4, etc.).
  • A security-first mindset, with an obsession for catching vulnerabilities before they're exploited.
  • A track record of delivering high-quality, reliable code in fast-moving environments.
  • A passion for DeFi, Ethereum, and building at the bleeding edge of web3.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • (Plus) Experience with prediction markets.
  • (Plus) Experience with formal verification tools or advanced Solidity security techniques.
  • (Plus) Contributions to open-source DeFi projects.
  • (Plus) Familiarity with multiple EVM chains and bridging solutions.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary & equity
  • Unlimited PTO, Health, Vision, & Dental coverage
  • 401k match
  • Hardware setup - new MacBook Pro, big display, & accessories
