Estimating Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Estimating Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Estimating Intern, you need a basic understanding of construction or engineering principles, strong mathematical skills, and progress toward a relevant degree such as construction management or civil engineering. Familiarity with estimating software (like Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or Microsoft Excel) and project management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help you excel in this role. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate cost estimates and supporting efficient project planning in a fast-paced environment.

What types of projects and tasks can an Estimating Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Estimating Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of pre-construction tasks, such as analyzing project drawings, preparing quantity takeoffs, and gathering material and labor cost data. Interns often support senior estimators by updating bid documents, attending site visits, and participating in team meetings to review project requirements. This hands-on experience helps interns develop a deep understanding of the estimating process, collaborate with project managers and engineers, and build a foundation for a future career in construction management or estimating.

What are Estimating Interns?

Estimating Interns are entry-level professionals, typically students or recent graduates, who assist the estimating team within construction or engineering companies. Their main responsibilities include helping to review project plans, gather data, and calculate material, labor, and time costs needed for a project. They work under the supervision of experienced estimators to learn the fundamentals of cost estimation and project planning. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the bidding and pre-construction process, helping interns develop industry-specific skills for future careers.
