NOTICE OF VACANCY

TITLE:                         English as a Second Language (ESL) Assistant
REPORTS TO:             ESL Advisor
SUPERVISES:            N/A
TERM:                        190-Day Contract
Job Summary: The ESL Assistant will support the delivery of educational services to English Learner (EL) students by working closely with ESL teachers, classroom teachers, and school staff to provide instructional and administrative support. This role assists in fostering a learning environment that enhances English language development, academic achievement, and cultural integration of EL students.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Classroom Support:
    • Assist ESL teachers in implementing lessons and activities that develop students' English language proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
    • Work with small groups or individual students to provide targeted instruction and support during ESL or general education classes.
    • Reinforce classroom rules and procedures while promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  2. Instructional Assistance:
    • Support EL students in understanding academic content by using instructional strategies and materials adapted to their English language level.
    • Help prepare instructional materials and resources for lessons.
    • Assist with the implementation of accommodations and modifications for EL students as outlined in their Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs).
  3. Language Development:
    • Facilitate language-building activities such as conversation practice, vocabulary development, and language games.
    • Provide support for EL students during assessments by helping clarify instructions and providing necessary language accommodations.
  4. Cultural Support and Advocacy:
    • Help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for EL students and their families by supporting the cultural and linguistic needs of diverse students.
    • Act as a liaison between the school and families of EL students by providing interpretation and translation services as needed for school events, parent-teacher conferences, and communication.
  5. Administrative Support:
    • Assist in maintaining and organizing ESL program files, materials, and student records.
    • Support the preparation and administration of the ESL Annual Assessment and other language assessments.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the ESL Director and Principal
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with English Learners or in an educational setting is a plus.
  • Bilingual proficiency is strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and families.
  • Basic understanding of second language acquisition and cultural diversity.
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting the academic and social success of EL students.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform essential job functions in an educational environment, including standing, walking, and working with students for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of instructional materials and student support items may be required.
Work Environment:
  • Public school setting with interactions across classrooms, ESL departments, and administrative offices.
  • May occasionally involve participating in school-wide events, field trips, and parent engagement activities.
