Job Description
The RN in the Extended Recovery Unit is responsible for providing safe, high-quality nursing care to patients who are in the post-procedural or overnight recovery phase. These patients have undergone surgery or interventions and require monitoring, pain management, mobility support, wound care, and discharge planning. The RN ensures that patients are stable, comfortable, and prepared to transition to the next level of care or discharge home.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments of post-procedural patients (vital signs, pain level, neurological and hemodynamic status, wound/incision site, IV/fluids).
  • Monitor for potential complications (e.g., bleeding, respiratory distress, infection, adverse responses to anesthesia) and intervene or escalate as needed.
  • Administer medications and treatments ordered by physicians/provider (including IV therapy, pain medications, anti-nausea, fluids).
  • Assist patients with mobility and early ambulation in accordance with post-operative protocols and safety standards.
  • Educate patients and families about post-procedural care: what to expect, how to manage pain, wound/incision care, mobility limitations, discharge instructions.
  • Document nursing care, patient responses, changes in condition, interventions, and discharge planning in the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team (surgeons, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, nurse navigators, therapists) to optimize patient outcomes and transitions.
  • Maintain patient safety by following infection control procedures, safe equipment operation, reporting unsafe conditions, and adhering to regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Delegate tasks to licensed and non-licensed staff appropriately, when applicable.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, unit readiness activities, and continuing education/professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned by unit leadership.
