How much do erlang engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 23, 2026, the average yearly pay for erlang engineer in the United States is $101,752.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,000.00 and $116,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Erlang Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Erlang Engineer, you need a solid understanding of concurrent and distributed systems, functional programming, and strong proficiency in Erlang, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with OTP (Open Telecom Platform), version control systems like Git, and continuous integration tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that set candidates apart. These competencies ensure the development of robust, scalable, and fault-tolerant systems, which are vital in high-availability environments.

What are Erlang engineers?

Erlang engineers are software developers who specialize in using the Erlang programming language to build scalable, concurrent, and fault-tolerant systems. Erlang was originally developed for telecom applications but is now widely used in industries requiring high availability, such as messaging systems, databases, and real-time applications. These engineers design, develop, test, and maintain applications that leverage Erlang's unique strengths, such as its lightweight process model and robust error-handling capabilities.

What is the difference between Erlang Engineer vs Elixir Developer?

Both Erlang Engineer and Elixir Developer work with functional programming and distributed systems. Erlang Engineers typically focus on telecom and real-time applications, while Elixir Developers often build web and scalable cloud services. The roles share many skills but differ in industry focus and preferred languages.

What are some common challenges Erlang Engineers face when working on large-scale distributed systems?

Erlang Engineers often encounter challenges related to debugging and maintaining highly concurrent, distributed systems, especially as the codebase grows. Ensuring fault tolerance and seamless message passing between nodes requires careful system design and thorough testing. Collaboration with DevOps and QA teams is crucial to monitor system performance and handle unexpected failures, as live updates and hot code swapping are common in production environments. Staying updated with OTP (Open Telecom Platform) best practices helps in addressing these challenges effectively.
