As of Sep 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for equipment financing in Virginia is $17.82, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.20 and $18.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is equipment financing?

Equipment financing is a type of loan or lease specifically designed to help businesses acquire equipment needed for their operations. Instead of paying the full cost upfront, companies can spread payments over time, which helps manage cash flow and preserve working capital. The equipment itself often serves as collateral for the loan, making it more accessible for businesses with limited credit history. Equipment financing can be used for a wide range of assets, from vehicles and heavy machinery to computers and office furniture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in equipment financing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Equipment Financing, you need a solid understanding of financial analysis, credit evaluation, and sales, typically supported by a degree in finance, business, or a related field. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, financial modeling tools, and knowledge of relevant lending regulations are important technical requirements. Excellent negotiation, relationship-building, and communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing client needs, structuring effective financing solutions, and building long-term client trust.

What are some common challenges faced in equipment financing roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in equipment financing often encounter challenges such as evaluating the creditworthiness of diverse clients, staying updated with rapidly evolving equipment technologies, and navigating fluctuating market conditions. Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build relationships with both clients and equipment vendors. Proactive communication, continuous training, and leveraging industry tools can help address these challenges, ensuring effective risk assessment and tailored financing solutions.

What is the difference between Equipment Financing vs Equipment Leasing?

AspectEquipment FinancingEquipment Leasing
OwnershipBuyer owns the equipment after paymentsLessor retains ownership; lessee uses the equipment
PaymentsLoan payments; may include interestLease payments; typically monthly
End of TermBuyer can keep, sell, or upgradeReturn, renew, or buy at residual value
Tax BenefitsInterest deductions, depreciationLease payments deductible as business expense

Equipment financing involves borrowing funds to purchase equipment, giving ownership at the end. Leasing allows use of equipment without ownership, often with flexible terms. The choice depends on whether you want ownership and potential tax benefits or lower upfront costs and flexibility.

Job description

East Coast Truck & Trailer Sales, Inc.

Portsmouth, Virginia

Full-Time | On-Site With Regional Travel

Relocation Assistance May Be Available

East Coast Truck & Trailer Sales, Inc. is seeking an experienced sales professional to help expand our dump-truck and vocational-equipment business throughout Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic.

We are looking for someone who understands dump trucks, construction customers and vocational equipmentโ€”or an accomplished heavy-equipment salesperson who is ready to specialize in this growing market.

This is not an automotive retail-sales position. It is an opportunity to build long-term relationships with contractors, paving companies, municipalities, public-works departments, equipment operators, fleet owners and other commercial customers that depend on properly specified work trucks.

About East Coast Truck & Trailer Sales

Founded in 1995, East Coast Truck & Trailer Sales is an established commercial-truck dealership and second-stage manufacturer headquartered on a 14-acre campus in Portsmouth, Virginia.

For more than 30+ years, we have provided specialized commercial trucks, equipment, financing, leasing, parts, installation and service to customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic and across the country.

As we continue expanding our dump-truck business, we are seeking a knowledgeable and driven salesperson who can help make East Coast a leading source for complete dump-truck packages.

Products You Will Sell

The successful candidate will sell and help develop a broad line of dump-truck and vocational-equipment packages, including:

  • Class 6, 7 and 8 dump trucks
  • Single-axle, tandem-axle and multi-axle dump trucks
  • Steel, aluminum and stainless-steel dump bodies
  • Asphalt and aggregate bodies
  • High-lift tailgate dump bodies
  • Contractor and municipal dump trucks
  • Landscape and medium-duty dump trucks
  • Snow-and-ice and public-works equipment
  • New and pre-owned vocational trucks
  • Custom truck-body and hydraulic installations
  • Financing, leasing and rental solutions
  • Replacement bodies, parts and equipment service

Responsibilities

  • Develop new dump-truck business throughout Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic
  • Build relationships with contractors, paving companies, municipalities, public-works departments, utilities, fleets and equipment operators
  • Manage and grow existing East Coast customer relationships
  • Prospect consistently by telephone, email, personal visits, industry events and referrals
  • Work with customers to determine payload, axle, body, hoist, hydraulic and application requirements
  • Help customers select the proper chassis and body configuration
  • Prepare accurate quotations and professional equipment proposals
  • Coordinate chassis sourcing, body specifications, installation, financing and delivery
  • Monitor competitive inventory, pricing and regional market activity
  • Maintain accurate customer, quotation and follow-up information in the company CRM
  • Work closely with East Coastโ€™s management, finance, installation, service and parts teams
  • Represent East Coast at construction, public-works, trucking and equipment-industry events
  • Follow every opportunity through from initial contact to final delivery and future replacement

Who We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate has successful sales experience involving one or more of the following:

  • Dump trucks
  • Commercial or vocational trucks
  • Dump bodies and hydraulic equipment
  • Construction or heavy equipment
  • Equipment rental
  • Truck bodies, trailers or upfitting
  • Municipal and government equipment
  • Asphalt, aggregate, excavation or paving customers
  • Fleet leasing or commercial-equipment finance

Experience with Peterbilt, Kenworth, Mack, Western Star, Freightliner, International, Ford, Isuzu or comparable commercial chassis is valuable but not mandatory.

A successful heavy-equipment, construction-equipment or rental salesperson who understands contractors and knows how to develop a territory will also receive serious consideration.

Qualifications

  • Proven success in outside business-to-business sales
  • Strong prospecting and territory-development ability
  • Understanding of commercial trucks, heavy equipment or construction customers
  • Ability to learn and explain technical truck and body specifications
  • Professional communication and proposal-development skills
  • Disciplined follow-up and CRM practices
  • Ability to manage long-cycle, high-value commercial transactions
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and acceptable driving record
  • Willingness to travel throughout an assigned territory
  • A strong reputation for integrity and customer service

Compensation and Support

East Coast offers a competitive compensation package designed to reward profitable sales growth, including:

  • Competitive base salary or guaranteed compensation during the territory-development period
  • Uncapped commission opportunity
  • Six-figure earning potential for an established producer
  • Company vehicle or vehicle allowance, depending on the final arrangement
  • Fuel card and approved business-expense reimbursement
  • Established customer relationships and company-generated opportunities
  • Product and manufacturer training
  • Support from experienced management, finance, installation, service and parts departments
  • Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate

The final compensation package will be based on the candidateโ€™s experience, industry relationships, sales history and ability to develop the market.

Build Your Career in Coastal Virginia

Candidates do not need to currently live in Virginia.

East Coast is located in the Hampton Roads region of coastal Virginia, which includes Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk and Portsmouth.

The area offers:

  • Virginia Beach and the Atlantic Ocean
  • The Chesapeake Bay
  • Boating, fishing and waterfront living
  • A large construction, maritime, military and municipal economy
  • Access to the Outer Banks of North Carolina
  • A year-round market for commercial trucks and equipment
  • A central location for serving Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., North Carolina and the broader Mid-Atlantic

For an experienced salesperson considering a move, this position offers the opportunity to build a meaningful territory while living in one of the East Coastโ€™s largest coastal metropolitan areas.

Why Join East Coast?

This is an opportunity to help build and lead a growing dump-truck sales divisionโ€”not simply inherit a desk and wait for incoming leads.

East Coast can offer customers a complete solution:

  • Chassis sourcing
  • Dump-body specification
  • Custom installation
  • Financing and leasing
  • Rental equipment
  • Parts and service
  • Long-term fleet support

The right person will have direct access to company leadership, the ability to influence inventory and product decisions, and the opportunity to develop a substantial book of business.

How to Apply

Please submit your rรฉsumรฉ along with a brief explanation of:

  • Your experience selling dump trucks, commercial trucks or heavy equipment
  • The products and manufacturers you have represented
  • The customer types and territory you currently serve
  • Your experience developing new accounts
  • Your approximate annual sales volume or other measurable accomplishments
  • Whether you would require relocation assistance

All qualified inquiries will be handled confidentially.
