Job description

Description

WEG is seeking engineering interns to support a variety of engineering and operations functions. The Industrial Engineering Intern will support the Industrial Engineering Department by assisting Manufacturing Engineers, Automation Engineers, CNC Engineering, and Tooling Engineering with daily engineering activities, continuous improvement initiatives, capital projects, manufacturing process development, and automation projects.

This position provides students with practical engineering experience within a high-volume manufacturing environment while developing technical and professional skills. The intern will participate in engineering projects involving manufacturing processes, automation systems, tooling, layouts, data analysis, and process improvements while working closely with cross-functional teams including Production, Quality, Maintenance, Safety, Purchasing, and Product Engineering.

This is a year-round internship requiring a minimum commitment of approximately 20 hours per week during academic semesters, with the opportunity to work up to 40 hours per week during school breaks and summer, based on business needs and student availability.

Main Responsibilities

Assist Manufacturing Engineers and Automation Engineers with engineering projects supporting production operations.

Support automation projects involving manufacturing equipment, robotics, sensors, vision systems, conveyors, tooling, and machine improvements.

Assist with the design and documentation of tooling, fixtures, ergonomic improvements, workstations, and manufacturing layouts using CAD software.

Collect, organize, and analyze manufacturing data using Excel, Minitab, Power BI, or other engineering tools to support process improvement initiatives.

Assist with time studies, workflow analysis, labor balancing, and manufacturing process optimization.

Support continuous improvement initiatives including Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, 5S, waste reduction, and productivity improvements.

Assist in developing and updating engineering documentation including work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), process documentation, bills of materials, and engineering reports.

Participate in equipment installations, process validation, production trials, commissioning activities, and new equipment startup under engineer supervision.

Support troubleshooting activities for manufacturing equipment by collecting data, documenting observations, and assisting engineers with root cause investigations.

Assist with project documentation including equipment specifications, quotations, schedules, meeting minutes, and capital project tracking.

Participate in cross-functional meetings with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Safety, Purchasing, and Product Engineering as assigned.

Assist engineers with continuous improvement projects focused on safety, quality, productivity, ergonomics, and cost reduction.

Maintain organized engineering files, drawings, reports, and project documentation.

*Responsibilities may vary depending on the department of assignment which will be determined after interviews have been conducted.

Requirements

Actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in:

Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation/Controls     Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related engineering discipline.

Preferred Junior or Senior standing, although qualified Sophomore students may also be considered.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications (Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint).

Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
