Epitaxy information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the epitaxy position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Epitaxy role, a strong background in materials science, semiconductor physics, and experience with crystal growth techniques—often supported by a degree in physics, engineering, or a related field—is essential. Familiarity with advanced epitaxial growth systems such as MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) or MOVPE (Metal-Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy), as well as the use of related analytical instruments, is highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this position. These qualities ensure precise material fabrication, reliable device performance, and successful collaboration in high-tech manufacturing environments.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an epitaxy engineer or technician?

As an Epitaxy engineer or technician, your daily responsibilities often include operating and maintaining sophisticated epitaxial growth equipment, preparing substrates, monitoring growth parameters, and conducting quality checks on produced layers. You may also analyze wafer samples using tools like X-ray diffraction or electron microscopy to ensure that physical and electrical properties meet specifications. Collaboration with process engineers, device designers, and R&D teams is common to troubleshoot issues and optimize material quality. This hands-on, detail-oriented role plays a critical part in the development of advanced semiconductors used in electronics and optoelectronics.

Job Description

KYOCERA SLD Laser is seeking a Sr. Epitaxy Technician to join our MOCVD operations team in Fremont, CA. This role supports the manufacturing of advanced GaN-based laser diode products through hands-on MOCVD tool operation, wafer preparation, wafer characterization, process monitoring, and close collaboration with engineering. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, comfortable working in a cleanroom manufacturing environment, and able to support production priorities with consistent quality and communication.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Perform daily epitaxy production activities, including wafer and hardware preparation, reactor loading, recipe execution, and MOCVD reactor operation.
  • Perform wafer characterization and inspections, including optical microscope inspection, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, AFM, and other metrology methods as required.
  • Support and maintain the MOCVD reactor production schedule by coordinating priorities, run readiness, and tool availability with engineering and operations.
  • Contribute to the development, documentation, and continuous improvement of best practices, standard operating procedures, and production workflows for MOCVD operations.
  • Partner with engineers on process and equipment troubleshooting, data review, yield improvement, and corrective actions to sustain and improve existing processes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-compliant work area while following cleanroom protocols and contamination-control requirements.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams regarding daily plans, production status, tool issues, and process concerns.
  • Support ISO 9001 and IATF quality-system requirements by following documented procedures, maintaining accurate records, and escalating deviations or quality concerns.

Experience and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in a related technical field such as electronics, semiconductor technology, materials science, electrical engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in a semiconductor cleanroom, wafer-processing, or related manufacturing environment; MOCVD, epitaxy, or compound-semiconductor experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, operators, technicians, maintenance, and cross-functional partners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and ability to accurately enter, review, and communicate process or production data.
  • Mechanical and/or electrical aptitude, with the ability to support basic equipment checks, identify abnormalities, and communicate tool issues clearly.
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment, including detailed wafer handling, tweezer use, gowning compliance, and contamination-control practices.
  • Ability to read, understand, and consistently follow standard operating procedures, work instructions, safety procedures, and quality documentation.
  • High attention to detail and strong commitment to product quality, process discipline, data accuracy, and safety.
  • Dependable, self-directed, and able to manage time, attendance, priorities, and routine tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Able to take direction, ask clarifying questions, adapt to changing priorities, and work effectively in a team-based production environment.
  • Must be able to work non-standard shifts, including weekends, overtime, or adjusted schedules as production needs require.
