How much do epitaxy engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for epitaxy engineer in the United States is $101,752.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,000.00 and $116,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an Epitaxy Engineer do?

An Epitaxy Engineer specializes in growing thin crystalline layers of semiconductor materials on substrates using techniques like Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) or Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). They optimize growth parameters to ensure high-quality material properties for applications in microelectronics, photonics, and optoelectronic devices. Their responsibilities include process development, equipment maintenance, and defect analysis to enhance material performance. Epitaxy Engineers often work in research labs or semiconductor manufacturing facilities to develop advanced materials for cutting-edge technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Epitaxy Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Epitaxy Engineer, a solid background in materials science, semiconductor physics, and thin film deposition is essential, often attained through a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with epitaxial growth systems such as MOCVD or MBE and data analysis tools is typical, with certifications in semiconductor manufacturing seen as a plus. Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong teamwork and communication skills help engineers excel in collaborating with cross-functional R&D and process teams. These competencies ensure high-quality crystal growth, innovation, and efficient troubleshooting in a precision-driven semiconductor environment.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Epitaxy Engineer in a semiconductor company?

Epitaxy Engineers are primarily responsible for operating and optimizing epitaxial growth reactors, monitoring process parameters, and analyzing results to ensure high-quality crystal layers. They work closely with process, device, and characterization engineers to troubleshoot issues and implement process improvements. Daily tasks may also involve running experiments, interpreting data, maintaining cleanroom standards, and documenting findings. Collaboration is key, as engineers often participate in cross-functional meetings to align production goals with research and development objectives.
