Job description

The Instructional Systems Designer is a fully experienced with the skillset or knowledge, works with minimal supervision; capable of serving as a trainer, mentor to junior and mid-level staff. They must be capable of designing and developing instructional material for customer training courses that supports the organization. They must demonstrate and utilize effective needs analysis, project management, course development, and evaluation skills to independently develop entry and advanced level courses for both internal and external audiences. Demonstrates proficiency in understanding computer systems, applications and interfaces. Demonstrates proficiency in data gathering techniques and the ability to devise, design and communicate systems solutions to client issues and problems of medium complexity. Demonstrates an intermediate understanding of the Connecticut Children's business functions. May require specialized knowledge in a specific application/computer system i.e. Captivate, Lectora, Dreamweaver, etc. Creates detailed work-related specifications, system design documentation, procedures, process and data flows, and project and change management plans. Communicates effectively with clients and colleagues. Demonstrates proficient degree of analytical skills.

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • BA/BS/AS Degree in Information Systems or related field, or equivalent demonstrated work experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Education and/or Experience Preferred:

  • Experience Preferred: 3 to 5 years, IT, Healthcare or related experience in a training capacity preferred.

   License and/or Certification Required:                                        

  • EPIC certifications in one or more applications and TED, i.e. Willow, ADT, ASAP, etc.
  • One or more professional certifications/fellowships, i.e. American Society for Training and Development 
  • (ASTD) and/or Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
  • Other relevant Healthcare IS or IS system certification, i.e. Cerner, Lawson, SAP, Microsoft, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Policies and procedures related to functional units supported.
  • Inter-relationships between functional areas
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook).
  • Project development life cycle methodologies desired.
  • Cross application/system workflow and data relationships is required.

In addition to the functions of the Associate ISD, the Instructional Systems Designer will be responsible for the following:

  • Delivers content clearly and concisely in accordance with established training program objectives and parameters and coaches and motivates students.
  • Applies adult learning principles in order to accommodate students' different learning needs and styles.
  • Provides training via a variety of delivery methods including classroom, WebEx, one-on-one, and material-based
  • Utilizes proper security methods to verify each student's role and approved access to relevant training and production environments.
  • Develops training exercises and tests to evaluate students' skills and progress and provides individual feedback to each student and his/her supervisor(s).
  • Develops systems to track performance and effectiveness of training programs and provides feedback to internal clients.
  • Makes recommendations concerning usability, integration, and support of various programs and applications application
  • Designs, develops coordinates and conducts training classes and materials on various programs and applications for staff members with a range of needs and personal skill sets, both clinical and non-clinical, in a variety of settings and locations.
  • Collaborates with Training Project Managers on training initiatives and with instructional technologists to design, develop and validate e-learning.
  • Collaborates with leadership and management to establish productive working relationships with analysts, management, subject matter experts, end users and vendor(s).
  • Keeps current in methodology and technology developments, recommends improvements and modifications, and works to incorporate.
  • Collaborates with Training Project Managers on training initiatives and with instructional technologists to design, develop and validate e- learning.
  • Works closely with Training Project Manager to establish and execute tasks, plans and processes.
  • Works to promote training program awareness and integration across projects, departments and the organization.
  • Mentors Levels and provides input regarding performance evaluations.
