Your role at GEI.
We are seeking a dedicated Environmental Scientist to join our team. This role involves investigation, remediation, monitoring, and report writing. The position includes both fieldwork and office work, with a focus on soil boring logging, sampling of various media, drilling oversight, air monitoring, and chemical data analysis. The Environmental Scientist will support environmental investigations, prepare detailed reports, and manage on-site operations at various locations, including Parks sites, Brownfield Cleanup sites, and former landfill sites.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Conduct soil boring logging and sampling of soil, groundwater, and soil vapor.
  • Oversee drilling and contractors, perform air monitoring, and provide daily reporting.
  • Analyze chemical data and prepare investigation reports and work plans.
  • Assist in the preparation of health and safety plans and summary reports.
  • Support field investigations at Parks sites and Brownfield Cleanup sites.
  • Perform routine monitoring at former landfill sites, including well gauging, groundwater sampling, and landfill gas measurements.
  • Inspect sub-slab depressurization systems and manage Clean Soil Stockpile operations.
  • Oversee import/export of materials, prepare manifests, and provide daily reports.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of a large remedy project at a former Manufactured Gas Plant site in the Bronx.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Geoscience, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1+ years of experience in environmental science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of soil classification and sampling of various media for chemical analysis.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in the field.
  • Flexible schedule and reliable transportation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with site assessment and remediation.
  • Proficiency in report writing and data analysis.
  • Comfortable with both fieldwork and office tasks.
  • Ability to manage on-site operations and oversee contractors.

Work Environment
The work environment includes a hybrid schedule with a mix of office and fieldwork. Some weeks may be entirely office-based, while others may involve 2-4 weeks of fieldwork. There is flexibility to work some office days from home. A significant project at a former Manufactured Gas Plant site in the Bronx will require full-time fieldwork with 10-hour workdays for 18-24 months. Shorter-term project sites may be located throughout the five boroughs. Mileage reimbursement is provided.
