We are seeking a GIS Developer with 3-5 years of experience for our Huntsville, AL office.
The candidate will be directly responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining GIS software solutions that extend and enhance the Esri ArcGIS platform. This role focuses on web-based GIS application development using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript, along with Python automation and systems integration to streamline workflows for field teams and decision-makers.

Responsibilities
  • Design and build custom web mapping applications using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript (4.x), HTML5, CSS, and modern JavaScript development practices.
  • Develop and maintain custom widgets and extensions for Esri web app frameworks (e.g., Experience Builder and Web AppBuilder) to deliver functionality not available out-of-the-box.
  • Create responsive, accessible, and user-friendly GIS tools for both desktop and mobile users.
  • Write and maintain Python (ArcPy) scripts to automate geoprocessing, map production, data updates, and publishing workflows (including geoprocessing services).
  • Integrate GIS with external business systems (e.g., asset management or ERP platforms) using RESTful APIs, JSON, SQL, and ETL approaches (e.g., FME or Python-based pipelines).
  • Support and contribute to ArcGIS Enterprise and/or ArcGIS Online configurations and customization efforts in coordination with GIS and IT stakeholders.
  • Follow modern software engineering practices including version control (Git/GitHub), code reviews, documentation, and deployment processes.
  • Collaborate with project managers and end users to gather requirements, translate business needs into technical designs, and deliver well-tested, maintainable solutions.
  • Adapt to and integrate new technologies in support of improving GIS development workflows and platform capabilities.
  • Adhere to safety and information security policies.
  • Work well independently and as a team member.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, GIS, Software Engineering, or related field is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in GIS application development or closely related software development experience with geospatial components.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and Python; working knowledge of SQL.
  • Experience with the Esri ArcGIS API for JavaScript and the ArcGIS REST API.
  • Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks such as React or Angular.
  • Experience configuring and/or customizing ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal/Server) and/or ArcGIS Online.
  • Demonstrated portfolio of web mapping applications, custom GIS tools, or relevant project experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
