POSITION OVERVIEW

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager leads the implementation and continuous improvement of EHS programs at the Milliken Hickory Plant. This role provides site-level leadership for environmental compliance, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, Responsible Care/RC 14001, emergency response and planning, loss prevention, process safety management (PSM), security, and medical programs.

The EHS Manager partners with plant leadership and front-line teams to reduce risk and prevent injuries, incidents, and environmental releases through strong systems, effective training, and disciplined follow-up. The role maintains knowledge of applicable regulations and ensures timely permitting, reporting, auditing, and recordkeeping. The EHS Manager also supports the site's EHS culture through coaching, engagement, and data-driven problem solving, and performs other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager and Milliken Corporate Safety and Environmental teams.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead site EHS strategy and day-to-day execution; coach leaders and teams to identify hazards, reduce risk, and strengthen EHS culture.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, safety, transportation, and security regulations and internal requirements; maintain required documentation and records.

  • Serve as the primary site contact for regulatory agencies and insurance carriers; manage permitting, reporting, inspections, and related follow-up.

  • Own EHS management systems, audits/inspections (including RCRA/housekeeping), action tracking, and the compliance calendar; report performance and trends using leading/lagging metrics.

  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions; verify effectiveness and drive timely closure.

  • Support safe work execution through permit review/approval and participation in change reviews, design/project reviews, job hazard analyses, and other risk assessments.

  • Lead and sustain Process Safety Management (PSM), including MOC, audits, PHA/HAZOP facilitation (and LOPA support as needed), and action-item governance.

  • Support industrial hygiene monitoring and exposure assessments (e.g., air/noise) and drive improvements based on results.

  • Maintain alignment to Responsible Care/RC 14001 requirements and support continual improvement activities and readiness assessments.

  • Develop and deliver EHS training, communications, and emergency response preparedness (plans, drills, coordination); partner with HR/leadership on injury management as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, occupational health & safety, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of EHS experience in manufacturing (chemical manufacturing or PSM-covered processes strongly preferred), with demonstrated program leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED

  • Professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM).

  • Experience facilitating PHAs (HAZOP or equivalent) and supporting LOPA/PSM programs.

  • Working knowledge of process safety technical aspects (e.g., P&IDs, emergency relief systems, suppression systems, facility siting) and recognized industry standards (ANSI, API, NFPA).

  • Experience with ACC Responsible Care and/or RC 14001 systems.

  • Experience developing or maintaining OSHA VPP STAR status in a PSM-covered facility.

  • Hazardous materials response knowledge (HazMat Technician-level training) and confined space rescue experience.

  • First Aid/CPR certification.

  • Experience in an organized labor/union environment.
