Job description

Research and Education Intern

VCU Libraries supports learning, research, and creativity across Virginia Commonwealth University. With locations at James Branch Cabell Library on the Monroe Park Campus and the Health Sciences Library on the MCV Campus, we help students, faculty, and staff access the information, spaces, and services they need to succeed. The VCU Libraries' Health Sciences Library, located in Richmond, VA, invites applications for the Health Sciences Librarian (HSL) Intern position with the Research and Education Department (RED). The position is open to current and recent graduate students in ALA-accredited library/information science programs.

Ideal for a currently enrolled or recently graduated student of library science with an interest in health sciences librarianship. The HSL RED Internship offers up to 25 hours per week and the opportunity to work with practicing health sciences librarians, in person or virtually. Through experiential learning, the individual in this position will be able to build and develop their career portfolio.

Reporting to the Internship Coordinator, the RED Intern is responsible for the completion of outreach and research support projects for the Research and Education Department at VCU Libraries Health Sciences Library. The internship experience will provide an opportunity for a librarian at the beginning of their career to gain practical professional experience in an academic health sciences library. The internship experience supports the development of an individual using the Medical Library Association's Competencies for Lifelong Learning and Professional Success. The RED Intern will work closely with health sciences librarians and directly with library users, including VCU faculty, students, and staff. There is also the potential to work with members of the Greater Richmond community. The RED Intern will gain the knowledge and skills to provide research and instruction support through opportunities to interact with users, conduct library orientations, present library workshops; as well as the possibility to participate in evidence synthesis projects. Work accomplished by the RED Intern could also include the creation and maintenance of learning objects such as research guides or instructional videos, development of workshop lesson plans, and data analysis and assessment support. The RED Intern will work with the Internship Coordinator to establish achievable personal and project goals for the duration of the internship period.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Employment contingent upon enrollment in or recent completion (no more than two years) of an ALA accredited Master Information or Library Science program.
  • Basic knowledge of library resources, such as academic library research databases, websites and information sources.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with research methods and practices, database searching techniques, instructional design techniques or project management skills.

Salary Range: $20 - 21/ hour
