What is an environmental project manager?

As an environmental project manager, you work on construction, waste management, and engineering projects with the goal of assessing the ecological impact of the work and reporting it to the relevant regulatory agencies. Your duties involve suggesting and investigating methods for mitigating environmental impact and developing best practices for project managers to follow. Educational qualifications include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental sciences or project management. Prior work experience in engineering or construction will set you ahead of other candidates and allow you to gather the knowledge and skills required to work on larger projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental project manager?

To thrive as an Environmental Project Manager, you need a strong background in environmental science or engineering, project management experience, and often a relevant degree or certification like PMP or environmental certifications. Familiarity with environmental regulations, project management software (such as MS Project), and data analysis tools is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help manage teams, stakeholders, and complex projects effectively. These skills ensure regulatory compliance, project success, and positive environmental impact in a highly regulated and multidisciplinary field.

What are some of the key challenges environmental project managers face when balancing project objectives with regulatory compliance?

Environmental Project Managers often navigate the challenge of aligning project goals with complex environmental regulations and stakeholder expectations. This requires staying current with evolving local, state, and federal laws, coordinating with regulatory agencies, and ensuring that project timelines and budgets accommodate permitting and compliance requirements. Effective communication and proactive planning are essential to anticipate potential roadblocks and integrate sustainable practices without compromising project deliverables. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams helps ensure all regulatory and environmental considerations are addressed throughout the project lifecycle.

As we continue to grow our environmental practice throughout Connecticut, we are seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Professional | Project Manager to join our team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned environmental professional who is passionate about leading complex projects, mentoring staff, and building strong client relationships. You'll play a key role in managing environmental investigations, remediation programs, brownfield redevelopment projects, and regulatory compliance efforts while helping shape the future growth of our Connecticut environmental practice.
If you thrive in a collaborative environment, enjoy balancing technical excellence with client engagement, and are ready to take on a leadership role within a growing team, we’d love to hear from you.

As a Senior Environmental Professional | Project Manager, you will:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, maintaining strong relationships and delivering exceptional service.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, staffing, and deliverables.
  • Ensure all project work meets regulatory requirements, quality standards, and client expectations.
  • Contribute to business development efforts through client interaction, proposal preparation, networking, and pursuit of new opportunities.
  • Mentor, supervise, and support the growth of early-career and mid-level environmental professionals.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across disciplines to deliver integrated solutions for clients throughout Connecticut and the Northeast.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geoscience, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of environmental consulting experience.

  • Strong understanding of Connecticut environmental regulations and regulatory programs.
  • Proven project management experience, including budget and schedule management.
  • Demonstrated leadership and staff mentoring experience.
  • Excellent communication, client management, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong technical writing and report preparation skills.

This is a hybrid role, offering the best of both worlds—collaborate in-office with a high-performing team and enjoy the flexibility of working remotely part of the week. We're committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining strong team connection and project delivery.
