ABOUT THE POSITION
Environmental Project Manager | Long Island, NY
VHB is seeking a Senior Environmental Planner/Project Manager to join and strengthen our Long Island team. This role leads and supports the preparation of environmental review documentation under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), with a focus on permitting and entitlements across a diverse range of project types.
The Environmental Project Manager plans, schedules, and coordinates complex planning efforts for major projects or multiple mid-sized initiatives. The role requires full responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and executing planning assignments, including land use analysis and development strategy. This position also serves as a technical specialist, maintaining strong internal and external relationships while ensuring project delivery aligns with regulatory requirements and client objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage project budgets, track financial performance, and oversee invoicing
  • Collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams to advance projects
  • Prepare, review, and manage technical documentation, including Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA), and permitting applications
  • Support proposal development, including budgeting, staffing estimates, and planning strategy
  • Monitor and interpret regulatory changes, policies, and legislation impacting projects
  • Lead and manage planning studies, feasibility analyses, reuse and redevelopment master plans, and project assessments
  • Conduct project-level needs assessments and site evaluations, including zoning and environmental constraints
  • Ensure project compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including NEPA and SEQRA requirements
  • Coordinate data collection and analysis related to economic, social, and physical land use factors
  • Research and interpret zoning codes, land use regulations, and policy frameworks
  • Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior staff for technical accuracy and quality
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations to stakeholders, agencies, and the public
  • Lead public outreach efforts, including meetings, workshops, and community engagement activities
  • Serve as liaison to advisory boards, elected officials, and planning and zoning committees
  • Conduct research and analysis on demographic, economic, and environmental variables
  • Develop and maintain project-related databases and planning tools
  • Represent VHB at industry events, conferences, and professional organizations

Skills and Knowledge
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations, including NEPA and related federal, state, and local requirements
  • Strong project and client management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong understanding of planning principles, research methods, and data analysis techniques
  • Familiarity with transportation agencies and State DOTs (preferred)
  • Knowledge of land use planning, transportation, aviation, or related specialization areas
  • Experience with innovative planning approaches such as smart growth, new urbanism, and sustainability initiatives
  • Proficiency in GIS a plus
  • Ability to apply statistical and analytical methods to real-world planning challenges
  • Effective communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Planning or a related field (e.g., Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Regional Planning, Sustainability, Economics, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in planning, environmental review, or regulatory compliance
  • Demonstrated experience with NEPA and SEQRA processes, particularly related to permitting and entitlements
  • Master's degree in a related field (preferred)

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Hauppauge, NY is $99,000 - $130,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
