What is environmental project management?

Environmental project management involves planning, coordinating, and overseeing projects designed to address environmental issues such as pollution, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. Professionals in this field work to ensure that projects meet environmental laws and standards while minimizing negative impacts on the environment. They often collaborate with engineers, scientists, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to deliver effective solutions within budget and timeline constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental project manager?

To thrive as an Environmental Project Manager, you need expertise in environmental science or engineering, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as a BS or MS in an environmental field. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project), regulatory compliance tools, and certifications such as PMP or environmental certifications (e.g., LEED, ISO 14001) is highly valuable. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help manage teams, stakeholders, and unexpected challenges. These proficiencies ensure projects are delivered efficiently, safely, and in compliance with environmental regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in environmental project management, and how can they be addressed?

Environmental Project Managers often navigate complex regulatory requirements, tight deadlines, and coordination among diverse stakeholders such as government agencies, community groups, and contractors. A frequent challenge is balancing project goals with environmental compliance and sustainability objectives. Effective communication, proactive risk assessment, and strong organizational skills are key to addressing these challenges. Regular team meetings and stakeholder engagement help ensure everyone is aligned and project milestones are met.

Job description

Environmental Project Manager

Bohemia, New York

Location: Bohemia, NY (170 Keyland Court, Suffolk County, Long Island)

Employment Type: Full-time

Experience Level: Manager / Supervisor โ€” 8+ years

Compensation: $100,000 โ€“ $125,000 per year

About Impact Environmental

At Impact Environmental, we put clients on solid ground โ€” and the same goes for the people who work here. Since 1989, we've carried projects from initial site assessment through regulatory closure, which means our people learn the whole process, not one narrow slice of it. We're a multidisciplinary team of scientists, geologists, engineers, and field technicians, and we hire people who think critically and want to own their work. That means real field time, direct client contact, and mentorship at every step from senior professionals who've built their own careers here and are invested in yours.

The Role

We are hiring an Environmental Project Manager to lead New York projects from our Bohemia office. You will manage a portfolio of brownfield, due diligence, and remediation projects for a private-sector client base of developers, industrial property owners, institutions, and their counsel โ€” and you will own both the technical quality and the financial performance of that portfolio. This is a hands-on project management role, not an administrative one. You will be in the field, in front of clients, and in front of regulators.

Flexibility

This is an in-person role โ€” our project managers are in the office and in the field, because that's where client relationships, field oversight, and mentorship actually take place. Within that, we support remote work when project schedules allow, and we work it out with each project manager.

What You Will Do

ยท       Manage environmental projects across a range of local, state, and federal regulatory drivers, including the NYSDEC Brownfield Cleanup Program, NYC OER E-Designation and Voluntary Cleanup Program, RCRA, and Superfund.

ยท       Plan and direct field investigation programs covering soil, soil vapor, and groundwater, including analytical program design, laboratory selection, and data evaluation.

ยท       Evaluate subsurface conditions and develop remedial approaches that are technically defensible and constructible.

ยท       Prepare and review work plans, technical reports, and regulatory correspondence with a focus on quality, defensibility, and meeting client and agency objectives.

ยท       Direct project staff and subcontractors; develop scopes, cost estimates, and schedules and manage the work to them.

ยท       Serve as day-to-day client contact, anticipate client needs, and build durable client relationships.

ยท       Manage project financial performance, including budgets, change orders, invoicing, and profitability.

What You Bring

ยท       Bachelorโ€™s or masterโ€™s degree in geology, environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related technical discipline.

ยท       Minimum of 8 years of New York environmental consulting, engineering, geology, or environmental science experience.

ยท       Demonstrated ability to carry projects from scoping through regulatory closure.

ยท       Strong technical writing, organizational, and client communication skills.

ยท       Strong computer literacy, including proficiency with industry-standard software.

ยท       Willingness to be based in our Suffolk County office with travel into the five boroughs. Company vehicles are available.

ยท       Valid driverโ€™s license and a driving record satisfactory under the companyโ€™s motor vehicle record policy.

Preferred, Not Required

ยท       Professional license or certification: Professional Geologist (PG), Professional Engineer (PE), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).

ยท       OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER, and OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety.

ยท       Experience with Surfer, MODFLOW, AutoCAD, or GIS.

ยท       Established business development relationships in the New York market.

Compensation and Benefits

$100,000 โ€“ $125,000 per year. Placement within the range depends on years of relevant New York regulatory experience, professional credentials, and demonstrated project management history.

ยท       Medical, dental, and vision insurance

ยท       Employer-paid life insurance and long-term disability coverage

ยท       Retirement plan with company match

ยท       Flexible Spending Account and Dependent Care Account

ยท       Paid time off and paid holidays

ยท       Company vehicles available for field and site travel

ยท       Employer-supported training, certification, and license renewal

A diverse private-sector client base means exposure to a wide range of project types and sizes across every stage of brownfield assessment, investigation, remediation, and redevelopment.
