What Do Environmental Planners Do?
An environmental planner is responsible for ensuring that urban and residential development projects comply with environmental codes and laws. As an environmental planner, you are considered an engineering expert who focuses on the sustainability and conservation of natural resources so that these projects make as small of an impact as possible. In this career, you are primarily concerned about compliance with established standards on environmental issues, so you work closely with government agencies such as the EPA and other related departments. You often work out in the field helping developers get the needed environmental permits. Other job duties include writing reports and documentation as part of the project development process.

Description
We are seeking a motivated professional to join our growing Nevada and California environmental teams - someone who is passionate about delivering high-quality work, enjoys solving complex environmental challenges, and thrives in a dynamic, project-driven environment. Based in our Reno office, this role offers a blend of in-office, field, and hybrid work alongside peers across multiple locations. Our success is driven by "The Crew"-a talented and dedicated team whose longevity reflects our commitment to creating a workplace where people feel valued, supported, and rewarded. We continuously strive to foster a culture that stands apart in the industry, offering meaningful career growth and stability as a legacy company that is not for sale. While we work hard and take pride in what we do, we also make time to connect and have fun through unique perks like casual dress, company-sponsored events, and a collaborative, engaging environment.
This is a Staff, hourly, non-exempt position
The Ideal Candidate
If you value Wood Rodgers' unique, people-first culture and are eager to contribute to its continued growth, this role offers a dynamic range of responsibilities. You will have the opportunity to be mentored while participating in the following:
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams-including transportation, civil engineering, planning, surveying, geotechnical, landscape architecture, and environmental professionals-to review site plans, assess projects, and develop solutions that minimize environmental impacts.
- Conduct site visits, collect field data, and perform biological and aquatic surveys to support environmental analysis and reporting.
- Assist in preparing environmental documentation and technical reports in compliance with NEPA, CEQA, and TRPA requirements.
- Navigating environmental planning and permitting processes by coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies to secure necessary regulatory approvals.
- Assist in preparing permit applications, monitor construction activities for compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and design specifications throughout project lifecycles.
- Stay current on regulatory changes and support informed project decision-making.
- Assist in supporting project delivery through research and project scoping.
- Build client relationships.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, biology, ecology, or related field.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in environmental planning, permitting or related work.
- Working knowledge of key environmental regulations (e.g., ESA, CWA, NEPA, CEQA, TRPA, NDEP).
- Strong communication and analytical skills.
- Effectively manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, with strong time management skills.
- Experience with GPS/GIS and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to perform fieldwork in varied and sometimes challenging environmental conditions.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel as needed.
A note on hourly pay ranges
The range does not reflect geographic variations and may fluctuate above or below the stated amount. Offers will be based on several factors, including experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, training, and location. Base pay is just one part of the comprehensive compensation package offered by Wood Rodgers. If you feel you meet the requirements but may be outside of the pay range, please apply anyway and let's talk through it.
