Location: Newark, CA

Position Type: Contract to Hire

Hourly / Salary: Based on Experience

Residency Status: US Citizen or Green Card Holder ONLY


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Environmental Specialist supports onsite customer operations through a combination of hands-on hazardous waste management and environmental compliance activities. This position is fully onsite in Newark, CA and is responsible for maintaining compliance with environmental regulations while supporting daily operational needs across five facilities.

The Environmental Specialist will oversee hazardous waste operations, inspections, environmental reporting, and compliance activities while working closely with onsite personnel, vendors, and leadership teams. This role requires strong knowledge of hazardous waste regulatory compliance as well as the willingness and ability to physically manage waste operations in a fast-paced environment. Considerable walking is required throughout the workday.

This position plays a key role in supporting site operations, maintaining regulatory compliance, and providing operational support for an account currently being covered by supervisory staff.


PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collects, reports, and tracks environmental compliance and monitoring activities at onsite facilities.

• Performs hazardous waste handling, container management, labeling, storage inspections, and waste accumulation area oversight in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

• Coordinates hazardous waste shipments and maintains accurate waste documentation and records.

• Conducts storm water compliance inspections, sampling, reporting, and training in accordance with facility-specific Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) and Industrial Storm Water General Permit (ISWGP) requirements.

• Maintains environmental compliance records and prepares required reports and documentation.

• Performs onsite environmental inspections, audits, and compliance reviews to ensure regulatory adherence.

• Coordinates with operational leadership, customer representatives, vendors, and regulatory agencies regarding environmental compliance matters.

• Oversees environmental vendors and waste service providers and monitors vendor performance and compliance activities.

• Tracks compliance tasks and assists with implementation of corrective actions and operational improvements as needed.

• Conducts formal and informal environmental and safety training for onsite personnel as required.

• Travels between five onsite buildings as needed to support operational and compliance requirements, including one facility located approximately 20 minutes from the primary site.

• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

• Thorough knowledge of hazardous waste regulatory compliance and environmental regulations relating to waste management, storm water, and environmental compliance programs.

• Ability and willingness to perform hands-on environmental operations and physically manage waste materials safely and efficiently.

• Strong understanding of environmental inspections, documentation, and reporting requirements.

• Good time management skills to ensure assigned responsibilities are completed efficiently and safely.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

• Effective interpersonal communication skills across various levels of the organization, customer representatives, vendors, and regulatory agencies.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on operational excellence and compliance.

• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic onsite environment.

• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations.

• Ability to adhere to company policies and safety standards while demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and integrity.

• Ability to perform extensive walking and work in active industrial and operational environments.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum of 4 years of experience related to environmental compliance, hazardous waste management, environmental science, or related environmental fields.

• HAZWOPER 40-Hour certification required.

• DOT certification required.

• Experience supporting onsite customer operations preferred.

• Experience with hazardous waste handling and environmental compliance programs strongly preferred.
