Munich Airport NJ LLC is a US-based subsidiary of the German Airport Operator Munich Airport. Munich Airport NJ LLC is responsible for the operations, maintenance, and concession management of Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
Environmental Sustainability Intern
This is a paid Environmental Sustainability (ES) Internship position. Join our team for the Summer of 2026. The ES Intern will assist the Environmental Health and Safety Manager and the Environmental Sustainability Specialist at EWR's Terminal A in supporting real-world energy efficiency and building performance initiatives throughout the terminal. Hours (up to 24 hours per week) are flexible to accommodate your schedule.
ES Intern Responsibilities
EWR Terminal A has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for Building Design and Construction from the U.S. Green Building Council. The next step is to maintain and enhance high-performance operations in alignment with LEED Operations + Maintenance (LEED O+M) with a strong emphasis on the Energy & Atmosphere credit category. The ES intern will assist in collecting operational energy data, preparing a centralized database for analysis, and supporting energy-related management practices. The internship will conclude with a comprehensive Energy Best Management Practices report, including recommendations for energy reduction, operational efficiency, and alignments with LEED O+M requirements. During this internship, you will gain experience in:
Energy Monitoring, Performance, and Verification
  • Learning the fundamentals of a Measurement and Verification plan, including how energy savings are measured within the Terminal's daily operations and maintenance practices.
  • Using utility invoices, metering data, and building systems information to collect, track, and analyze energy consumption trends.
  • Supporting documentation and data collection associated with LEED O+M v4.1 credits in energy performance.

LEED Knowledge & Professional Development
  • Learning the structure and the use of the LEED credit library, with emphasis on LEED O+M v4.1 guide.
  • Receiving 16 hours of online training towards passing your LEED Green Associate certification.
  • Gaining valuable, marketable experience in aviation energy management and environmental compliance at a major airport terminal.
  • Working as a part of a team of professionals who embrace diversity, foster collaboration, practice mentorship, and believe in a positive, healthy work climate.

Education & Experience
  • Currently pursuing a degree in the environmental field, including but not limited to: Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and employ the basics of research, design, and application within his or her discipline.
  • Demonstrated interest in energy efficiency or building performance through coursework, projects, or extracurricular involvement.
  • Strong analytical skills, with comfort working with data related to energy consumption, building operations, or environmental metrics.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time, permanent, and ongoing basis without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check to work in the secure areas of an airport.
The base salary range for this role is $21.25 per hour. You will learn a wealth of information about the aviation industry and airport operations while here, and if this internship goes full-time, additional benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) will be offered! Total compensation, including base salary to be offered, will depend on elements unique to each candidate, including candidate experience, skills, education and other factors permitted by law.
