Description
The Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) at the University of Michigan is a center for teaching, research, and dialogue where faculty, students, and guests focus their inquiry on a range of topics and issues. DAAS has embarked upon a non-tenure track LEO Lecturer I search for a scholar with expertise that could connect with a combination of slavery, pop culture, new media, film studies, legal studies, critical technology, urban humanities, and/or environmental studies. Preferred candidates should have an interest in Black social and cultural life within urban spaces and foreground Black Studies epistemologies in their scholarship. DAAS seeks a scholar who sits at the intersection of some of the disciplines mentioned above. We welcome scholars whose expertise and teaching interrogate the various ways that social positions are constituted and reconstituted in urban environments that engage transnational flows of culture, memory, histories, multi-media stories, legal studies, critical technology, film studies, and environmental studies. We invite applications from scholars from all disciplines, especially those doing interdisciplinary work. We are especially interested in scholars situated in fields such as legal studies, environmental studies, film studies, pop culture, black geographies, critical geography, as well as the theory and praxis of new media and black social/ cultural movements. We seek a scholar with experience working in collaborative and interdisciplinary teams that are committed to anti-racist practices, community-based involvement, and co-produced knowledge. Finally, we are excited by candidates who contribute to our department's attentiveness to intersectionality around gender, gender expression, class, sexuality, (dis-)ability, and other forms of uplifting society. We see intersectionality as key to producing deeper understandings of how Black lived realities manifest themselves; how spatial trauma, disavowal, and displacement are constituted and experienced; and how emancipatory (Afro)futures get imagined and built.
The position is expected to contribute to the current strengths of DAAS' community of scholars and teachers. This is a university-year appointment with an expected start date of August 31, 2026. Interested applicants must either hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment or be ABD (All But Dissertation). Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in both practice and teaching.

• Statement that demonstrates commitment to inclusion through scholarship/research/practice, and/or teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement. There may be some overlap with your practice/research component and teaching statements (1-3 pages).

Applicants for this position are also expected to interact with and provide feedback to the DAAS Curriculum Committee, as appropriate, regarding student academic progress (or lack thereof) throughout the term. Teaching qualifications, teaching experience, and evidence of outstanding teaching will determine the selection of a candidate.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications*
Candidates must either hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment or be ABD (All But Dissertation) in the humanities or social science with a focus on critical technology, legal, environmental, film studies, and/or digital culture. Experience teaching courses with variable styles of delivery. The successful candidate must have cutting edge and contemporary knowledge and experience in teaching and practice in the field.
Desired Qualifications*
A Ph.D. is preferred. The successful candidate is likely to have substantial experience in interactive/intergroup dialogue and experiential teaching. Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching highly desired.
