What is an environmental field consultant?

Environmental Field Consultants are professionals who assess, monitor, and help manage the impact of human activities on the environment. They conduct fieldwork such as collecting soil, water, and air samples, perform site assessments, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Their work helps organizations minimize environmental risks and adhere to legal standards. Environmental Field Consultants often work with businesses, government agencies, and non-profits to provide expert advice on environmental issues and sustainable practices.

What types of projects and environments can an environmental field consultant expect to work in?

Environmental Field Consultants often work on a diverse range of projects, including site assessments, remediation plans, environmental impact studies, and compliance monitoring for industrial, construction, and public sector clients. This means you may find yourself working outdoors at contaminated sites, wetlands, or construction zones, as well as indoors handling data analysis or report writing. The variety keeps the work engaging but also requires adaptability to different physical environments, regulatory frameworks, and client needs. Collaboration with engineers, scientists, and regulatory agencies is common, making strong communication skills essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental field consultant?

To thrive as an Environmental Field Consultant, you need expertise in environmental science, data collection, sample analysis, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a degree in environmental science or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, environmental monitoring equipment, and industry certifications like HAZWOPER are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and adaptability help consultants excel in fieldwork and stakeholder interactions. These skills enable accurate environmental assessments, ensure regulatory adherence, and facilitate effective client communication.

What is the difference between Environmental Field Consultant vs Environmental Scientist?

Environmental Field Consultants primarily conduct field assessments, site inspections, and environmental compliance tasks, often working directly at project sites. Environmental Scientists may perform similar fieldwork but also focus on research, data analysis, and reporting. Both roles require environmental knowledge, but the Consultant role emphasizes client-facing fieldwork, while the Scientist role leans toward research and analysis.

Do environmental field consultants make a lot of money?

Environmental field consultants' salaries vary based on experience, location, and certifications, but they generally earn a median annual wage around $50,000 to $70,000. Experienced professionals with specialized skills or advanced degrees can earn higher salaries, especially when working on complex projects or in high-demand areas.

How much does an environmental field consultant get paid?

Environmental field consultants typically earn between $45,000 and $75,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, often supplemented by fieldwork and site visits.

What does an environmental field consultant do?

An environmental field consultant conducts on-site assessments to evaluate environmental conditions, such as soil, water, and air quality. They collect samples, analyze data, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, often using specialized tools and safety equipment in outdoor or industrial settings.

What qualifications do I need to be an environmental field consultant?

Environmental field consultants typically need a bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, biology, or a related field. Relevant skills include knowledge of environmental regulations, data collection, and analysis, often supported by certifications such as OSHA safety training or environmental sampling certifications. Field experience and proficiency with tools like GIS or sampling equipment are also valuable.

Job description

Environmental Field Technician - 80% domestic travel

Job Description

The Environmental Field Technician will support environmental remediation projects across the mid-Atlantic and national locations. This role is ideal for an entry-level candidate who is hardworking, and eager to build a long-term career in environmental field work and project management. You will spend most of your time in the field performing in-situ remediation activities, traveling frequently, and using both mechanical and technical skills to support site operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field-based environmental remediation activities, including in-situ remediation, direct push injections, and well injections at various client sites.
  • Assist with setup, operation, and breakdown of remediation equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Travel to project sites across the mid-Atlantic region and nationally, with approximately 80 percent of time spent on local and national travel.
  • Conduct site inspections and support environmental field work as directed by project leads.
  • Follow all safety protocols and regulatory requirements, including procedures associated with 40-Hour OSHA and HAZWOPER training.
  • Use Microsoft Office to complete basic documentation, data entry, reporting, and communication related to field activities.
  • Apply mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot minor equipment issues and support routine maintenance of field gear and machinery.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure projects are completed on time and in accordance with project specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and site conditions as required by project documentation standards.
  • Represent the company professionally at client sites, demonstrating reliability, strong work ethic, and a commitment to quality and safety.
  • Support project management activities over time by learning workflows, schedules, and field-to-office communication processes, with the opportunity to grow into project management responsibilities.

Essential Skills

  • Willingness to travel frequently, with approximately 80 percent of the role involving local and national travel.
  • Comfort working primarily in the field at client sites rather than in an office setting.
  • Hardworking, reliable, and with the ability to perform manual field tasks and handle equipment.
  • Completion of a 40-Hour OSHA safety training course (OSHA 40) or willingness to obtain it as required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office for basic documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to work with tools, machinery, and field equipment.
  • Interest in or exposure to environmental science, geology, construction, farming, or related hands-on work.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions, adhere to safety protocols, and work effectively as part of a small team.

Qualifications

  • HAZWOPER training or experience supporting hazardous waste operations and emergency response.
  • Experience or coursework in environmental science, geology, or related fields.
  • Experience in farming, construction, or other physically demanding work environments.
  • Experience in environmental field work, remediation, inspection, or well injections.
  • Exposure to project management or an interest in growing into a project management role over time.
  • Familiarity with in-situ remediation techniques, direct push injections, and environmental field sampling.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with clients and team members.
  • Motivation to grow within a small, expanding company and take on increasing responsibility.
