Environmental Compliance Project Manager information

What does an Environmental Compliance Project Manager do?

An Environmental Compliance Project Manager oversees projects to ensure that all activities adhere to environmental laws, regulations, and standards. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing compliance efforts, including conducting audits, preparing reports, and liaising with regulatory agencies. Their work helps organizations avoid legal penalties and ensures that environmental impacts are minimized throughout project lifecycles.

What are some common challenges faced by an Environmental Compliance Project Manager when coordinating multidisciplinary teams?

Environmental Compliance Project Managers often work with teams that include scientists, engineers, regulatory specialists, and contractors. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as each group may have different priorities and technical language. Balancing regulatory requirements with project timelines and budgets also requires strong organizational and negotiation skills. Successful managers build collaborative relationships, establish transparent processes, and stay informed on evolving regulations to keep projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Compliance Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Compliance Project Manager, you need a solid background in environmental science, regulatory compliance, and project management, usually backed by a relevant degree and industry experience. Familiarity with environmental management systems (EMS), permitting software, and certifications such as PMP or CEM are commonly required. Exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams, manage stakeholders, and oversee complex regulatory projects. These skills ensure environmental projects meet legal standards, minimize risk, and maintain sustainability objectives.

What is the difference between Environmental Compliance Project Manager vs Environmental Specialist?

Job description

Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

5 days ago Requisition ID: 1071

About Solx

Solx is building the next generation of intelligent manufacturing. Our factory floor is where advanced hardware meets advanced software โ€” and where AI at the edge directly drives yield, throughput, quality, and uptime. We are investing in the systems, infrastructure, and talent to make our operations the most intelligent in the industry โ€” and we are building the manufacturing capacity to match that ambition.

About the Role

Everyone goes home safe, and the site stays clean. As Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager, you own EHS on Solx's construction site โ€” building and running the safety, occupational-health, and field environmental-compliance program for our manufacturing expansion, from site prep through commissioning. On an active, multi-trade jobsite, you set the standard, hold every contractor and worker to it, and have the authority to stop work when it isn't met.

This is a hands-on, on-site role for an EHS professional who has led safety and environmental compliance on large, complex construction projects and knows how to build a real safety culture โ€” not just paperwork. You will oversee contractor EHS across every trade, drive hazard and exposure prevention in the field, lead incident prevention and response, and keep construction activities compliant with environmental requirements in partnership with the Environmental & Permitting Manager. You will report directly to the Project Manager.

Core Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and own the site-specific EHS program โ€” safety, occupational health, and field environmental compliance โ€” including policies and procedures.
  • Enforce OSHA construction standards and applicable Puerto Rico and federal EHS regulations across the site.
  • Oversee contractor and subcontractor EHS performance; review contractor safety plans, job hazard analyses (JHA/JSA), and qualifications.
  • Conduct daily site inspections, audits, and toolbox talks; identify and correct hazards before they cause harm.
  • Own controls for high-risk activities โ€” excavation and trenching, fall protection, cranes/rigging/critical lifts, electrical and lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work, and scaffolding.
  • Own occupational health and industrial hygiene on site โ€” exposure monitoring, hazard communication, heat-illness prevention, noise and respiratory protection, and ergonomics.
  • Ensure construction activities meet environmental requirements in the field โ€” erosion and sediment control, spill prevention and response, waste handling, and dust and noise control โ€” in coordination with the Environmental & Permitting Manager.
  • Hold stop-work authority and elevate serious risks to the Project Manager without hesitation.
  • Lead incident prevention, investigation, and root-cause analysis; drive corrective actions and manage OSHA recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Deliver EHS orientation and training for workers and visitors; manage site access, PPE standards, and signage.
  • Own emergency response planning, drills, first-aid/medical coverage, and coordination with local responders.
  • Track leading and lagging EHS metrics, report performance to the Project Manager, and build a strong, visible safety culture across all trades.
What You'll Work On

The scope of this role spans the full EHS program for a large, multi-trade high-tech build-out, including: safety program development and OSHA compliance, contractor EHS oversight, occupational health and industrial hygiene, high-risk work controls, field environmental compliance, incident prevention and investigation, training, and emergency preparedness.

  • The EHS program for a multi-gigawatt manufacturing build-out.
  • Contractor and subcontractor EHS oversight across civil, structural, building, MEP, and equipment-installation trades.
  • High-risk work controls and permits โ€” excavation, fall protection, crane/rigging, lockout/tagout, confined space, and hot work.
  • Occupational health and industrial hygiene, and field environmental compliance in coordination with permitting.
  • Incident prevention and investigation, EHS training, and site emergency preparedness.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years in construction EHS โ€” safety and environmental compliance โ€” including the lead EHS/safety role on large, complex construction projects.
  • Deep working knowledge of OSHA construction standards (29 CFR 1926) and applicable federal and local EHS regulations.
  • Experience overseeing contractor and subcontractor EHS on projects of $50M+.
  • Hands-on experience managing high-risk construction activities and their controls, plus occupational-health and field environmental-compliance requirements.
  • Strong incident investigation and root-cause analysis skills, with disciplined recordkeeping and reporting.
  • OSHA 500/510 (construction outreach) and/or CHST, CSP, or comparable certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field โ€” or equivalent experience with relevant certifications.
  • Strong field presence and the credibility to hold contractors to standard and stop work when needed.
  • Willingness to be based on-site in Puerto Rico for the duration of construction.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual English/Spanish โ€” strongly preferred for clear communication with the site workforce.
  • Experience on industrial, advanced-manufacturing, cleanroom, or fab construction projects.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or occupational-health experience, and familiarity with process-safety and hazardous-materials considerations as construction transitions to commissioning.
  • Experience delivering projects in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, or other tropical, hurricane-exposed environments.
Essential Functions & Physical Requirements

This is an on-site role based at an active construction site. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The role typically requires the ability to:

  • Walk active construction sites and uneven terrain for extended periods, in outdoor conditions and varying weather, to observe work and enforce EHS.
  • Access excavations, elevated areas, scaffolding, and confined spaces as needed, and climb ladders or stairs.
  • Work around heavy equipment, moving machinery, dust, noise, and construction hazards.
  • Use and demonstrate standard personal protective equipment (PPE) as required on the construction site.
  • Respond quickly on foot to incidents across the site, and occasionally lift and carry up to approximately 25 lbs.
Reasonable Accommodation

Solx provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities. If you need an accommodation during the application or interview process, contact [email].

Solx is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
