As a Laboratory Assistant (LA), you will support our Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) in essential lab operations, contributing to accurate diagnostics and patient care. The SEMG Lab is located at 4865 Lavista Rd. Suite B, Tucker, GA 30084. This entry-level role is ideal for individuals passionate about healthcare support and laboratory work. The Laboratory Assistant (LA) at Southeast Medical Group assists Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) in performing routine laboratory tasks, including specimen collection, processing, and equipment maintenance. This role supports daily quality control checks, maintains accurate documentation, and ensures adherence to safety protocols while upholding patient confidentiality and delivering quality customer service. Drawing from best practices in clinical laboratory assistance (e.g., following AABB and CLSI guidelines for specimen handling and safety), the Lab Assistant will contribute to efficient lab workflows, inventory management, and a safe working environment under the supervision of MLTs and lab leadership.


Requirements

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assists in specimen collection and processing, including labeling, centrifuging, and preparing samples for testing under the guidance of MLTs, ensuring proper handling to prevent contamination and errors.
  2. Prepares lab equipment, reagents, and work areas for procedures; cleans and sterilizes instruments and surfaces in accordance with OSHA and infection control standards.
  3. Maintains equipment records and daily work logs.
  4. Enters laboratory data accurately and promptly into the lab information system (LIS) or electronic health records (EHR), verifying information for completeness and accuracy.
  5. Follows safety protocols, including monitoring biohazard waste disposal, maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE), and assisting with inventory checks and supply ordering to support uninterrupted operations.
  6. Supports quality assurance activities, such as participating in basic quality control checks, proficiency testing, and team training sessions; assists in maintaining lab documentation for inspections and compliance.
  7. Provides general administrative support, such as filing reports, organizing supplies, and helping with patient instructions for specimen collection.
  8. Collaborates with MLTs and other staff to respond to routine lab needs, troubleshoot minor issues, and perform other assigned duties while prioritizing patient safety and confidentiality.

Minimum Required Education, Experience & Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Basic laboratory training (e.g., through vocational programs or on-the-job experience) or relevant coursework preferred.
  • Basic computer literacy skills, including familiarity with data entry and Microsoft Office, required.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow instructions precisely, and commitment to safety protocols.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills for working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Education, Experience & Skills

  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA), or equivalent from an accredited program preferred.
  • Previous experience with Allscripts and/or CGM LabDaq (LIS) preferred.
  • Previous experience with QuidelOrtho Vitros 5600 and/or Sysmex XN-2000 preferred.
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory, healthcare, or related setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic lab procedures, such as specimen processing and aseptic techniques, aligned with best practices from organizations like the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to varying workloads.

Physical & Mental Requirements 

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to push or pull heavy objects using up to 100 pounds of force.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use fine motor skills to operate office equipment and/or machinery.
