Location: Oakland, CA (Hybrid)

Duration: Long Term Contract

Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced Java Full Stack Developer with strong backend development expertise and hands-on experience in legacy application modernization and migration projects.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with legacy Java enterprise applications and modernizing existing codebases through activities such as Java version upgrades, JBoss/WildFly application server upgrades, legacy code refactoring, performance optimization, and application modernization.

The primary focus will be on Java backend development and modernization, while the frontend responsibilities will involve maintaining and enhancing JSP-based applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze, maintain, enhance, and modernize existing legacy Java enterprise applications.
  • Lead or contribute to application modernization and migration initiatives, including:
    • JBoss/WildFly application server upgrades
    • Java version migration and modernization
    • Legacy code refactoring
    • Application performance and scalability improvements
  • Refactor existing code to improve performance, maintainability, scalability, security, and code quality.
  • Design and develop robust backend services, business logic, APIs, and system integrations.
  • Develop and maintain REST APIs and microservices using Java and Spring/Spring Boot.
  • Support frontend development and maintenance using JSP, Servlets, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Troubleshoot complex application and production issues and perform root-cause analysis.
  • Identify and implement application performance improvements and optimization opportunities.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, business analysts, QA, DevOps, and other engineering teams throughout modernization and migration initiatives.
  • Follow established coding, testing, documentation, security, and deployment best practices.

Required Technical Skills

Backend Development

  • Strong hands-on experience with Core Java / Java 8 or higher.
  • Strong experience with Spring / Spring Boot.
  • Good understanding and hands-on experience with REST APIs and Microservices.
  • Experience working with JBoss / WildFly application servers.
  • Proven experience with legacy Java application migration and modernization.
  • Hands-on experience with code refactoring, application upgrades, and platform migration projects.
  • Strong SQL and database experience with one or more of:
    • Oracle
    • SQL Server
    • MySQL
  • Experience with debugging, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and production support.

Frontend Development

  • Hands-on experience with JSP.
  • Strong understanding of Java Servlets.
  • Good knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing legacy web/UI applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience migrating applications from older JBoss environments to newer JBoss/WildFly and Java platforms.
  • Experience modernizing legacy monolithic Java applications.
  • Experience with Java version upgrades and application server migration projects.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Experience with Git or other source control systems.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and take ownership of modernization initiatives.
