Job Summary
DrBalcony is seeking an entry-level Structural Designer to support the preparation of structural repair designs and construction documents for exterior elevated elements and wood/timber structures. This role works closely with structural engineers, drafters, and project managers to assist in developing structural drawings, reviewing field information, and preparing design packages in accordance with applicable building codes and project requirements.
This position focuses primarily on wood and timber structures, including balconies, decks, stairways, walkways, and related structural components. Training and mentorship will be provided; however, basic familiarity or academic exposure to wood structural systems is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Design and Drafting
  • Assist in preparing structural drawings and repair details using AutoCAD, Revit, or similar drafting software.
  • Support the development of structural layouts, framing plans, and repair details for wood and timber structures.
  • Revise drawings and plans based on engineering markups and project requirements.
  • Help maintain organized and accurate drawing sets and project documentation.

Engineering Support
  • Assist structural engineers with basic design calculations and project coordination.
  • Review field measurements, photos, and inspection information to support design development.
  • Learn and apply California Building Code (CBC) and relevant structural design standards.

Collaboration
  • Work closely with engineers, drafters, inspectors, and project managers to support project delivery.
  • Participate in internal design and QC review processes.
  • Coordinate revisions and updates based on project feedback.

Quality Control
  • Review drawings for completeness, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Help identify drafting conflicts or missing information before final review.
  • Follow company drafting and documentation standards.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • EIT certification is a plus but not required.

Experience
  • 0-2 years of structural drafting or design experience.
  • Internship, academic projects, or entry-level experience in structural or construction-related work is acceptable.
  • Exposure to wood/timber structures through coursework, projects, or work experience is preferred.
  • Experience with balcony, deck, or residential wood framing is a plus but not required.
Software Skills
Preferred familiarity with:
  • AutoCAD
  • Revit (preferred but not required)
  • Bluebeam or PDF markup tools
  • Microsoft Office

Experience with structural analysis software (SAP2000, STAAD, etc.) is a plus but not required for this entry-level role.
