How much do entry software developer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 23, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry software developer in Santa Clara, CA is $117,756.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,600.00 and $124,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an entry software developer?

Entry software developers are professionals who are new to the software development field, typically with less than two years of experience. They are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced developers. Entry-level developers often work on smaller tasks or projects while learning best practices, tools, and methodologies used in software engineering. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals transitioning into tech, as it provides foundational experience and growth opportunities within a development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry software developer?

To thrive as an Entry Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of databases or cloud platforms is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills enable new developers to contribute efficiently to projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate successfully within development teams.

What types of projects and technologies are entry software developers typically assigned to when starting out?

As an entry software developer, you can expect to work on foundational tasks such as bug fixes, feature enhancements, or simple modules within larger applications. You will often be introduced to the company's tech stack, which may include popular programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, and tools for version control and collaboration, such as Git and Jira. These initial assignments are designed to help you become familiar with the codebase and development workflow while supporting more experienced team members. Collaboration with mentors and participation in code reviews are common, providing learning opportunities and feedback to help you grow in your role.

Can I be an entry software developer with no experience?

Entry software developer roles often require some foundational knowledge of programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with little to no professional experience if they demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, relevant coursework, or personal projects. Gaining certifications, building a portfolio, and learning tools like Git can improve your chances of securing an entry-level position without prior work experience.

What do entry-level software developers make?

Entry-level software developers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and company size. Starting salaries often increase with skills in programming languages, such as Java, Python, or C++, and familiarity with development tools and environments.

Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Software Developer (Contractor) with strong software engineering experience in Python and/or Go, full-stack development, and enterprise automation. The ideal candidate has built and supported scalable software and automation solutions in large, distributed enterprise environments across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure.

This role is development-focused and requires someone who is comfortable designing systems, writing production quality code, building APIs and services, integrating with infrastructure platforms, and developing automation frameworks. Experience with configuration management and automation platforms such as Ansible, AWX, AAP, Salt, Chef, Puppet, or similar tools is required, but the primary focus is hands-on software development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable applications, APIs, services, and automation frameworks using Python and/or Go.
  • Build production quality software for large-scale distributed enterprise environments, focusing on scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Develop REST APIs, backend services, integrations, and automation workflows across infrastructure and cloud platforms.
  • Build automation for infrastructure provisioning, configuration, patching, monitoring, compliance, and lifecycle management.
  • Work with automation/configuration management technologies such as Ansible, AWX, AAP, Salt or similar tools.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and Infrastructure as Code solutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex software, automation, API, infrastructure, and performance issues.
  • Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, cloud, networking, storage, and application engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong hands-on software development experience building production applications and automation solutions.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and/or Go, including software design, debugging, testing, concurrency, and API development.
  • Experience developing REST APIs, backend services, distributed applications, and reusable software frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one automation/configuration management platform: Ansible, AWX, AAP, Salt, Chef, Puppet, or equivalent.
  • Strong experience with Linux, Shell scripting, Git, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Experience with at least one Cloud service AWS, Azure, or GCP and container technologies such as Docker/Kubernetes.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and system-design skills.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a software developer first, with strong hands-on coding and system-design capabilities, who also understands infrastructure and automation. They should be comfortable building software for distributed enterprise environments rather than only writing scripts or running existing automation tools.

We are specifically looking for someone who has designed and developed automation platforms, services, APIs, or frameworks, not someone whose experience is limited to executing playbooks, maintaining scripts, or administering infrastructure.
