How much do entry software developer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry software developer in Reston, VA is $104,312.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $66,100.00 and $110,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an entry software developer?

Entry software developers are professionals who are new to the software development field, typically with less than two years of experience. They are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced developers. Entry-level developers often work on smaller tasks or projects while learning best practices, tools, and methodologies used in software engineering. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals transitioning into tech, as it provides foundational experience and growth opportunities within a development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry software developer?

To thrive as an Entry Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of databases or cloud platforms is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills enable new developers to contribute efficiently to projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate successfully within development teams.

What types of projects and technologies are entry software developers typically assigned to when starting out?

As an entry software developer, you can expect to work on foundational tasks such as bug fixes, feature enhancements, or simple modules within larger applications. You will often be introduced to the company's tech stack, which may include popular programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, and tools for version control and collaboration, such as Git and Jira. These initial assignments are designed to help you become familiar with the codebase and development workflow while supporting more experienced team members. Collaboration with mentors and participation in code reviews are common, providing learning opportunities and feedback to help you grow in your role.

Can I be an entry software developer with no experience?

Entry software developer roles often require some foundational knowledge of programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with little to no professional experience if they demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, relevant coursework, or personal projects. Gaining certifications, building a portfolio, and learning tools like Git can improve your chances of securing an entry-level position without prior work experience.

What do entry-level software developers make?

Entry-level software developers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and company size. Starting salaries often increase with skills in programming languages, such as Java, Python, or C++, and familiarity with development tools and environments.

The ideal candidate will have strong full-stack development experience and a deep technical understanding of geospatial software, ESRI/ArcGIS data structures, databases, APIs, and cloud deployment.

This role will focus on taking scientific code, including MATLAB and Python, and optimizing it for computational efficiency while preserving scientific validity and producing outputs suitable for GIS applications. The developer will work closely with scientific and cloud engineering teams to transform research capabilities into scalable, deployable software within AWS.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new features and infrastructure across the database, API, and web tiers to support project requirements.
  • Optimize scientific code written in MATLAB and Python for computational efficiency while maintaining scientific accuracy and performance.
  • Develop and deploy geospatial applications using technologies such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS, OpenLayers, QGIS, and GeoServer.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of ESRI/ArcGIS data structures, including development with ArcGIS Pro and ESRI C# back-end bindings to programmatically integrate data into desktop applications.
  • Support development and integration with ESRI cloud and web-based applications.
  • Develop, inspect, test, verify, and validate software throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Build and deploy containerized applications using Docker and AWS in collaboration with cloud engineering SMEs.

  • Review software designs, requirements, change specifications, and implementation plans for technical and contractual compliance.
  • Ensure software requirements are properly allocated, traceable, testable, and aligned with project objectives.
  • Develop and maintain technical and project documentation supporting software development and delivery.
  • Collaborate with scientists, software developers, GIS specialists, and cloud engineers to transition research capabilities into operational environments.

*This position is designed to be flexible, with responsibilities evolving to meet business needs and enable individual growth.
