What is an entry software developer?

Entry software developers are professionals who are new to the software development field, typically with less than two years of experience. They are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced developers. Entry-level developers often work on smaller tasks or projects while learning best practices, tools, and methodologies used in software engineering. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals transitioning into tech, as it provides foundational experience and growth opportunities within a development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry software developer?

To thrive as an Entry Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of databases or cloud platforms is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills enable new developers to contribute efficiently to projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate successfully within development teams.

What types of projects and technologies are entry software developers typically assigned to when starting out?

As an entry software developer, you can expect to work on foundational tasks such as bug fixes, feature enhancements, or simple modules within larger applications. You will often be introduced to the company's tech stack, which may include popular programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, and tools for version control and collaboration, such as Git and Jira. These initial assignments are designed to help you become familiar with the codebase and development workflow while supporting more experienced team members. Collaboration with mentors and participation in code reviews are common, providing learning opportunities and feedback to help you grow in your role.

Can I be an entry software developer with no experience?

Entry software developer roles often require some foundational knowledge of programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with little to no professional experience if they demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, relevant coursework, or personal projects. Gaining certifications, building a portfolio, and learning tools like Git can improve your chances of securing an entry-level position without prior work experience.

What do entry-level software developers make?

Entry-level software developers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and company size. Starting salaries often increase with skills in programming languages, such as Java, Python, or C++, and familiarity with development tools and environments.

The Full Stack Developer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications across all layers of the technology stack, including front-end user interfaces, back-end services and APIs, and database systems. This role operates within Populus Financial Group's IT Application Service Management organization and supports a complex environment that includes point-of-sale (POS) systems, IBM i (AS/400) back-end processing, and store-level operations across hundreds of retail locations. This position requires strong full stack development skills along with practical experience in POS infrastructure, store data retrieval, and IBM i environments, enabling immediate contribution to both new application development and ongoing operational support needs.
Major Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain front-end user interfaces using modern frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js); collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into functional, user-friendly screens.
  • Perform store-level incident investigation and production troubleshooting, including pulling POS transaction logs, reconstructing transaction sequences, comparing store configurations, and isolating root causes.
  • Execute SQL-based data extractions against IBM i DB2 (ACEDATA tables) and Microsoft SQL Server to support production troubleshooting, reporting, audits, and ad hoc analytical requests.
  • Analyze and validate store-level deployment configurations; detect missed deployments, configuration discrepancies, and DLL mismatches using WinMerge and configuration file comparison techniques.
  • Retrieve and deliver store artifacts including check images, receipts, and transaction records from POS store drives (via UNC path) and IBM i IFS, supporting compliance, audit, and evidence collection requests.
  • Manage and maintain scheduled tasks and applications on the jump server; coordinate application deployments and service account transitions with DevOps.
  • Participate in code reviews, maintain version control discipline using Git and/or TFS, and contribute to CI/CD pipeline development and deployment processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional IT teams (DevOps, Loans, Cards, Bill Pay, Sales Audit, Banking) for issue escalation, feature delivery, and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintain and synchronize project files, SQL reference queries, troubleshooting guides, and technical documentation to shared drives for team access.

Key Competencies
  • Strong analytical skills for diagnosing complex issues across POS, IBM i, and web application layers; comfortable working through ambiguous problems to resolution.
  • Effectively document technical processes, communicate findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders, and share knowledge across teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks independently and adapt quickly to shifting priorities.
