What do entry-level programmers do?

Entry-level programmers write, test, and maintain code for software applications under supervision. They often work with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, and use development tools such as IDEs and version control systems. Their tasks include debugging, learning company coding standards, and gaining experience in software development processes.

What is an entry programmer?

An Entry Programmer is a beginner-level software developer responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining simple code under supervision. They typically work on basic programming tasks, fix bugs, and assist more experienced developers as they learn industry practices. Entry Programmers are usually recent graduates or individuals new to the programming field, and this role helps them gain practical experience and develop their coding skills for more advanced positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry programmer?

To thrive as an Entry Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and experience with version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help entry programmers collaborate and adapt in team environments. These skills and qualities are essential for efficiently writing, debugging, and maintaining code while supporting project goals.

What is the difference between Entry Programmer vs Junior Software Developer?

AspectEntry ProgrammerJunior Software Developer
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or associate degree, some programming knowledgeBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, basic coding skills
Work EnvironmentEntry-level tasks, supervised, often in IT or software companiesDeveloping software, debugging, collaborating with teams in tech firms
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech, finance, and government sectors for entry rolesWidely used in software development companies and tech startups

The main difference between an Entry Programmer and a Junior Software Developer lies in their experience level and educational background. Entry Programmers typically have less formal education and work under close supervision, focusing on basic coding tasks. Junior Software Developers usually hold a bachelor's degree and participate in more complex development activities, often with more independence. Both roles serve as stepping stones in a programming career, with the Junior Software Developer position generally requiring more skills and experience.

What types of projects can an entry programmer expect to work on during their first year?

As an Entry Programmer, you'll typically start by working on smaller tasks within larger projects, such as fixing bugs, writing basic code modules, or assisting with testing and documentation. You'll collaborate closely with more experienced developers and may participate in code reviews, which helps you learn best practices and team workflows. Over time, you'll gradually be given more responsibility, such as developing features or maintaining portions of the codebase, allowing you to build technical skills and gain exposure to project lifecycles.

How to get a job as an entry programmer with no experience?

Entry programmers can improve their chances by learning programming languages such as Python or Java, building a portfolio of personal projects, and gaining familiarity with development tools like Git. Internships, coding bootcamps, and online courses can also provide practical skills and certifications that demonstrate capability to employers.

Job description

At Stantec, we help deliver the critical minerals needed to power our world, from the cars we drive to the infrastructure powering our communities. And we don't just design the largest, deepest, and most technically challenging mines in the world-we do it sustainably. We're helping clients reduce energy usage, adopt clean energy sources, and implement digital solutions and automation.
Join our team of mining professionals and you'll be at the forefront of this evolving industry while building the mine of the future. You'll also build your own future, with exciting opportunities for development and advancement.
Your Opportunity
At Stantec, our geotechnical engineers play a meaningful role in supporting the responsible development of critical resources while advancing safe, sustainable, and well- governed engineering solutions. We are seeking a Civil or Geotechnical Engineer- in- Training (EIT) to join our U.S. Energy and Resources Geotechnical Team and begin building a strong foundation in geotechnical and mining engineering practice.
In this role, you will support dynamic and technically challenging projects in the U.S. and internationally, with a primary focus on tailings storage facilities, heap leach facilities, and waste rock management systems. You will gain hands- on experience across the full project lifecycle, from early- stage investigations and design through construction support, operations, closure, and reclamation. Beyond mining, you will also have opportunities to contribute to projects involving water dams, pumped storage, and hydropower facilities, providing exposure to a broad range of geotechnical applications.
You will join a highly collaborative national team of approximately 100 geotechnical and geological professionals, working alongside experienced engineers, subject matter experts, and industry leaders. As an Engineer- in- Training, you will develop practical skills through participation in field investigations, construction oversight, and monitoring programs; perform geotechnical calculations and numerical analyses; and support the preparation of engineering designs and technical deliverables.
This role offers a structured and supportive entry point into the geotechnical profession. You will receive mentorship from senior and intermediate engineers, gain exposure to best- practice project governance and dam safety stewardship, and progressively take on more complex technical tasks as your experience grows. Opportunities to learn from client interactions, internal technical reviews, and multidisciplinary project teams will help prepare you for long- term professional growth.
Stantec is committed to investing in the development of early- career engineers. This position provides a strong foundation for professional licensure, technical specialization, and future leadership opportunities within the organization. We are looking for curious, motivated, and adaptable individuals who enjoy solving complex engineering problems and are eager to learn within a supportive team environment. Domestic and international travel will be required for site- based support and field activities for up to approximately 50% of the year.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Support the planning and execution of geotechnical field and laboratory programs, including participation in field investigations such as drilling, cone penetration testing (CPT), and geophysical surveys, under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Assist with the development of geotechnical material characterizations for use in design and analysis, incorporating laboratory testing results and field data.
  • Perform engineering calculations and numerical analyses using industry- standard software such as GeoStudio and Rocscience to support civil and geotechnical design and characterization of site conditions.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical design deliverables, including engineering reports, technical memoranda, construction specifications, and design drawings.
  • Support proposal development activities, including assistance with project scheduling, scope definition, and preliminary cost estimating.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, both internally to project leadership teams and, as appropriate, in support of client meetings and reviews.
  • Promote and adhere to safe work practices, following company, client, and regulatory guidelines when planning and executing work in both office and field environments; participation in MSHA and/or OSHA training will be required.

Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail, with the ability to clearly document engineering work and technical observations.
  • Foundational understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, with exposure to seepage, slope stability, and deformation analyses; familiarity with analysis and modeling tools such as GeoStudio, Rocscience, FLAC, or similar software is preferred.
  • Interest or initial experience supporting mine waste and tailings management, water dam engineering, and/or mine closure and reclamation projects is considered an asset.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in field assignments at remote project locations, including multi- week rotations as needed; travel of up to approximately 50% of the time is an expectation of this role.
  • Enthusiasm for gaining hands- on experience through fieldwork, site investigations, and construction support, with flexibility to work in varied environments and project settings.
  • Strong desire to learn and grow within a collaborative team environment, working under the guidance and mentorship of experienced engineers.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks under general supervision, demonstrating initiative, curiosity, and sound professional judgment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a B.S. in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or equivalent. Preference given to candidates who have taken and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
  • 2-4 years of experience working on civil and/or geotechnical engineering projects, focusing on detailed design, site investigation, and technical communication. Preference given to mine waste/tailings management related experience.
