What is an entry level writer?

Entry level writers are individuals who are at the beginning of their writing careers, often with limited professional experience. They may create content such as articles, blog posts, marketing materials, or social media updates for businesses, websites, or publications. Entry level writers typically focus on developing their writing skills, learning about different writing styles, and building a portfolio. These positions usually require strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to take feedback and improve.

What does an entry level writer do?

The job of an entry-level writer is to help create and publish content. Someone in this role uses creative or technical writing skills to produce a story, article, or research piece. An entry-level writer typically sends their work to a senior writer or editor for editing. Many industries or employers have specific style guidelines that writers are expected to follow, so people often use this position to learn about content standards, gain experience, and develop skills. An entry-level writer frequently manages multiple assignments and performs research to ensure the accuracy of content.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Writer, you need strong writing, grammar, and research skills, typically supported by a relevant degree or coursework in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with word processing software (such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs), content management systems (CMS), and basic SEO practices is often expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and openness to feedback are essential soft skills that help new writers stand out. These skills ensure high-quality, engaging content production and enable effective collaboration with editors and team members.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level writers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level writers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, adapting to different writing styles, and receiving constructive feedback. It's common to juggle multiple assignments while learning to meet varied editorial guidelines. To succeed, it's important to communicate proactively with editors, be open to feedback, and manage time effectively. Building strong research skills and collaborating with other team members can also help overcome initial difficulties and contribute to professional growth.

Job description

About the Role:

CI is looking for talented and motivated Research Associates to join our team. Research Associates track the digital platforms provided by the nation’s leading financial services firms, collaborate on written deliverables, learn to work with clients and become subject matter experts in their given industry. Successful Research Associates grow into Analysts, who lead research, present their findings and manage relationships with clients on custom consulting projects. Typical consulting engagements include competitive landscape analysis, benchmarking studies and advice for executives on customer-facing technology and related trends.

About Us:

Corporate Insight (CI) is a research and consulting firm known for providing actionable competitive intelligence on the digital customer experience. CI publishes in-depth research on online/mobile banking, investing, insurance, retirement and emerging areas like fintech and digital advice. For over 30 years, we have helped firms improve the way they serve millions of customers by offering objective feedback and advice on their customer experience.

CI strives to deliver high-quality work daily, but we like to have fun, too. Our active social committee organizes regular team-building and recreational events. We have frequent in-office, out-of-office and hybrid events, including field days, scavenger hunts, board game tournaments, an annual MLB game, and more.

CI provides health insurance, vision and dental insurance, and a 401(k) with a company contribution. We also provide paid time off: vacation days, sick days and personal days.

CI is currently operating on a hybrid model at our NY office where team members will be expected to work at our Midtown Manhattan office part of the time.

Responsibilities:

  • Writing reports summarizing changes to an assigned industry's digital experiences
  • Detailing competitive insights about the customer experience
  • Tailoring research to address clients’ interests
  • Managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Keeping current on industry trends and innovations
  • Checking data in deliverables to ensure quality and accuracy
  • Supporting Analysts with consulting engagements, custom projects and client inquiries

This position is suited for an entry-level candidate interested in beginning a career in business, consulting, research or financial services. Your cover letter should outline your qualitative research and writing experience. Successful applicants have a range of backgrounds, including but not limited to business, economics, English, history, chemistry, government and sociology. Note: This is not a financial analyst position. Candidates with experience that exceeds the below may be hired at a more senior level.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a record of strong academic performance
  • Exceptional writing, speaking and analytical skills
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic and intellectual curiosity
  • Professional writing style with experience writing in multiple styles
  • Experience working independently and collaborating with a team
  • Experience conducting research and communicating results to an audience
  • Attention to detail and very high standards for one’s work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a business environment (internships with financial services firms or consulting firms are a plus)
  • An understanding of both website usability principles and financial services
  • Quantitative research experience, specifically survey data analysis
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, specifically Word and PowerPoint; familiarity with Excel, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive are a plus
