What Does an Entry-Level Video Game Tester Do?

The job of an entry-level game tester is to test video games for different gaming platforms, such as a PC, game console system, or mobile device. Their duties are to play games to ensure gameplay follows the designer’s specifications, identify any bugs, and test the overall user experience, including assessing the functionality of controllers. An entry-level video game tester then reports their findings to other QA testers, game developers, and engineers. They are responsible for providing instant feedback on the application, as well as documenting technical issues. Some gaming jobs require advanced qualifications, including a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a relevant field as well as experience in QA or software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Video Game Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Video Game Tester, you generally need a keen attention to detail, basic knowledge of gaming platforms, and strong written communication skills, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with bug tracking systems like JIRA and experience using various consoles or PC setups are common technical requirements. Strong problem-solving skills, patience, and the ability to work collaboratively help testers stand out in this role. These skills are crucial to identifying game issues, ensuring quality, and facilitating clear feedback between testers and developers.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level video game testers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level video game testers often encounter challenges such as repetitive tasks, tight deadlines, and the need to communicate bugs clearly to developers. Adapting to different testing tools and game genres can also be demanding. To succeed, it's important to stay detail-oriented, develop strong documentation skills, and maintain open communication with team members. Embracing feedback and being proactive about learning new testing processes can help you grow and advance in this dynamic field.
