Job description

Summary OPEN UNTIL FILLED, MAY CLOSE ON OR AFTER APPLICATION REVIEW DATE OF JULY 27TH, 2026 We will fill the position at the appropriate job series level based on the selected candidate's qualifications. Under the direction of the Superintendent of Operations and direct supervision of the Street Crew Supervisor, performs various tasks to maintain, clean, and repair sewage, potable water, recycled water distribution lines and other related equipment. Maintenance Worker Streets I: This is the entry-level classification in the job series.

Incumbents work under close supervision as they learn and perform a limited range of tasks. Familiarization with the District's facilities, policies and procedures is required at this level. The hourly pay ranges from $36.44 to $46.65, depending upon qualifications

Maintenance Worker Streets II: This is the skilled-level classification in the job series. Incumbents perform the full range of skilled duties. Assignments may encompass a variety of tasks, and may seldom require detailed instructions.

Must exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines and show initiative. The hourly pay ranges from $40.96 to $52.43, depending upon qualifications. Essential Functions The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed

Maintenance Worker Streets I: Operate a variety of small equipment, including generators, portable pumps, gas detectors, ventilating fans, and common hand and power tools. Ability to operate District's heavy equipment including excavator, tractor, backhoe, jackhammer, valve turning equipment, and compactor; may make modifications and repairs to District facilities to improve flexibility.

Perform field maintenance of equipment to assure its proper operation; assist in performing major repair and maintenance work to potable water, recycled water, and sewer systems. Read and accurately interpret potable water, sewer, and recycled water sectional maps. Assist in the repair of District Facilities, transmission mains, force mains, service lines, sewer lines, valves, hydrants, air-n-vacs, concrete repairs, and asphalt repairs.

Make necessary repairs and/or recommendations as required to fire hydrants, service line leaks, main line breaks, and manhole problems. Act as a member of the Confined Space Entry Team including associated training and physical requirements. Ability to successfully accomplish standard operating procedures as assigned by Supervisor.

Work varying shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, standby duty and respond to call backs. Respond to emergencies during and after work hours consistent with the Incident Command System (ICS), Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS), and National Incident Management Systems (NIMS). Install, repair and replace insertion valves.

Perform other duties as assigned. Maintenance Worker Streets II: Ability to perform essential functions of a Maintenance Worker Streets I. Respond to customer complaints regarding fire hydrants, service line leaks, main line breaks, manhole problems, and make necessary repairs if needed.

Assist with the training of Street Crew Maintenance Worker I. Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the KSAs is: Maintenance Worker Streets I: High school diploma or equivalent certificate. Valid Class "A" California driver's license with tank and air brake endorsements or ability to obtain within 18 months of job placement and a physical every two years as required by the state; must maintain a safe driving record.

Possession of California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Grade D1 Certificate or ability to obtain within 18 months of job placement. Must have mechanical aptitude practiced in the water and/or wastewater industry and have the ability to accurately read and interpret construction drawings and the District's sectional maps. Ability to take direction and follow through on one's own to complete assigned duties.

Maintenance Worker Streets II: Meet the minimum qualifications of a Maintenance Worker Streets I. Valid Class "A" California driver's license with tank and air brake endorsements and a physical every two years as required by the state; must maintain a safe driving record. Possession of California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Grade D1 Certificate.

Ability to initiate work activities on one's own with minimal direction. Physical Qualifications Position requires the ability to work in a field maintenance environment with the ability to carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment and parts weighing up to 80 pounds. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb during field maintenance and repair work.

Must be able to stand and walk for extended time periods. Must have hearing, vision, and eye-hand coordination sufficient to operate equipment and maintain good awareness during maintenance and repair jobs. Must be able to work in an environment that could produce exposure to dust, dirt, and significant temperature changes.
